Hair colour advice please

Hello All,

I have naturally mid-brown hair, greying badly at the roots, especially visible in my parting:(

For the last few years I have used Nice N Easy semi permanent dye to colour it every 5 weeks or so. I started with natural light brown but my hair ended up too dark, and have in the last year moved to light ash brown, but my hair is getting too dark with build up again.

I have read somewhere that I should move to dark blonde shades as these blend more naturally with my grey, and the dark build up is avoided. This seems a bit counter-intuitive though as I am in no way blonde! I have dark eyebrows etc.

Is it dangerous to use a dark blonde shade on hair which has been dyed multiple times with light brown shades? I don't want to end up with green, orange OR unnaturally light hair!

Help!

I have done the same as you, started off with a light brown shade which seemed to get darker, then I moved to a dark blonde & it is fine; I have used it for a couple of years now with no problem. I use Superdrug's own brand permanent colour.

you may be better using a permanent hair colour and just apply to the regrowth, it is the amount of times the hair colour is put through the whole length of hair that leads to the build up of colour.

I have naturally black hair and use the darkest brown and a dye brush to touch up my roots, mine are mainly in one patch so this is the only but I dye

Hi, I have the same problem, I use Castings semi permanent hair dye and the ends get darker and darker over time. It may be best just to do the roots for a while until the colour is fading at the ends. I did once try a lighter colour but it didn't cover the grey at my roots so I tend to stick to medium brown.

    Thanks for your replies.

Can anyone advise as to whether I am likely to have a hair dye disaster if I go to a blonde shade from a brown shade? As I said earlier, my hair is naturally 80% mid brown and 20% white!

I think the best thing to do is to go is speak to a local professional - it's hard to say without seeing your hair and doing strand tests what result could happen. If you mess your hair up it's going to cost double to get it corrected. If you really can't afford to go to a salon and pay full price what about going to a training college? Fully supervised at all times and ridiculously reduced prices! There is also the option of the dreaded groupon/kgb to see if there are any deals on for you to take advantage of! x

  • Hi

You wont be able to go from brown to blonde without bleaching your hair. Why not pop along to a local college and have it done free or for pennies initially and then its easier to maintain.

Dark blonde's dyes are almost brown anyway. Slightly lighter than the brown shades. Works for me :)

I have mid brown hair and loads of grey too - use Nice and Easy permenant 112 and bought a proper hairdressers brush to apply just to roots. like this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Riche-DIRECTIONS-TINT-BRUSH-4-use-Hair-Colour-/120894207808?pt=UK_Health_Beauty_Hair_Care_Hair_Colouring_Dyes_PP&hash=item1c25db3740
I decant all the dye into an old bowl for easier application.

I had the problem with colour build up on the ends so am much more careful now.

The 112 has nice tones and covers well.

If your going lighter at all, go to a salon, get it done professionally as it is very easy to get a patchy result or turn your hair orange.

It can cost a lot which is partly also because it can take a long time or may need to be done in several stages but you are far more likely to end up with a decent result and if it does go wrong (unlikely) any reputable salon will fix any errors.
