Looks like it was a £99 charge when you took out the mortgage. Not £50.

thisismoney (http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/mortgag...in_page_id=8#r) suggests that deals agreed before Feb 2005 should have been charged only £100

    December 2004, actually.
    ditto - stephen25uk!

I need to know the same. mortgaged with RBS from dec 04 - july 07

did you ask the operator directly without any paperwork then? and did you call your local branch?

The sealing fee changed to £225 the month you took your mortgage, you would be due to pay the £225.
Ive just called Natwest and was told that i took a deal with new rates in 2004 and the contract at that point stipulated £225 so therefore im not due to a refund... could that be the truth or are they just yankin my chain??

If you took a new rate in December 04, then yes, you'd be due the £225. When did you take the new product?
does anybody know answer to my query - do RBS not charge a MEAF now? I changed provider from RBS in July 07...

Only on mortgages taken after the 1st August 2007, previous mortgages still need to pay this.
    Thanks Scott,good advice ...but ...

i have checked my mortgage offer from 2 years ago - but can see no reference to a sealing fee just an 'additional charge' of £225 - could this be the MEAF?

also with the solicitors we used to arrange the recent remortgage, their letter states all charges for expedited completion and fixed fee rates included in their costs.

    would this be the MEAF?

    That'd be the one, yes.
just about to call RBS to enquire about MEAF as I cant see it on the mortgage paperwork - then saw something on Martin's info page that makes me think that RBS stopped charging these in July 07. My remortgage went through in July 07, moving me to another provider. Am I right then that I havent been charged a sealing fee?
I took out the mortgage in December 2004...
Dont want to phone and look stupid, demanding money back that I havent even been charged!!!

Your rate was taken in December 04, which was the same month the change in sealing fee went through (to £225), so you would be due to pay it, and would have also paid it. The MEAF is only not being charged on mortgages taken after August 1st 2007. It would have been on the redemption statement (which your solicitors should have ran past you at least, or given you a copy of).

What an evening!!! Started with 'phoning C&G (still open after 6 pm - great!). Thought at first they were going to want me to provide loads of info I didn't have but, in fact, they were really helpful - and even apologised for over-charging me! I've had a mortgage with them since 1999 but increased it last year (so, in their eyes, closed the old account to open 2 new sub accounts for more money and was charged exit fee for doing so). At the time, I questioned it with them (last year) as I said that they hadn't even told me I'd be charged it - but I got nowhere. This time was very different... They'll put £175 plus interest into my bank account within 15 days!:j

So, I thought I'd try the Halifax....they were open even later!!
Only had a mortgage with them from 1997 to 1999 but thought I'd see if there was anything to claim...They were really helpful - just needed a roll number for the account - only a tenner owing here (fee went from £40 to £50 apparently) which they will send by cheque within the next few weeks.:D

    Thanks, Martin :money:

Thanks for making this so clear Scott.

Before i saw this post, I took the plunge and phoned RBS. The man I spoke to was actually really apologetic that I just missed the cut off point for MEAF partial refund and said he is not at all adverse to paying out refunds when due...

So I would advise any ex-RBS customers to phone and claim. All I had was my mortgage account number - I phoned 08457 212600
  • Just rang Abbey about our mortgage exit fee, we paid 225 not long back when we swapped to a new 10 year deal, the guy told me hed put a form in the post for me to fill in and theyd look at it from there. Is this what theyre doing now or have i just been politely fobbed off?
  • I called the RBS a few months ago and was told they didn't owe me a penny,

I decided to call again this eveing just for fun and they said yes you over paied by £25. Not a lot but better than a poke in the nose.

Glad I tried again now :j

    All

Just spoke to Barclays on number provided on this site 10 minutes later I am £114 better off

    Original fee £95
    Fee at close £195
    Interest accrued £14

Is it worth pursuing for whole £195 or am I being greedy. Is this standard practice for refunds with all the lenders.

    Thanks

I am a bit confused. Can anyone help please.

Mar 1993 - Took out Mortgage with Northern Rock

Oct 1994 - Moved house and stayed with Northern Rock. Transferred Mortgage to new property
    Charged Completion fee - £150
    Admin Fee £50
    Arrangement Fee £100

Nov 2002 - Still with Northern Rock - Took Out 3 Year fixed Rate.
    Charged Completion Fee- £395

Does anyone reckon I can claim back any of these charges?
