  • Hi all,

New to the forum and was intrigrued by the whole MEAF thing. I'm curious as to whether someone can act as an advocate i.e. like companies which reclaim bank charges on your behalf for a percentage?

Would anyone know if this is:

    a) legal
    b) being done by someone already

    Thank you
  • Hi.

I have changed my mortgage twice in the past 5 years firstly from Mortgage Express to Abbey and then 2 years after from Abbey to my current lender (2 years ago). I have no account details from either of these mortgages. Do i need account numbers etc?????????????

    Thanks
    Marion:confused:

@Damian H - the process is so easy that it is ridiculous to pay someone else to do it for you, but yes, there are people trying it on for a share of these very small amounts.

@mnveille - welcome to the forum. If you read the original article and then some of the first few posts on this thread, you'll see that the answer is NO. Just write to the lender with the property address and name(s) of the account holders.
  • Hi MarkyMarkD

Thanks for the help. I am going to go back to the beginning of this thread and have a read.

    Cheers:beer:

    Hi,

I was on the phone to my previous mortgage provider (Halifax) the other day, and enquired whether I'd been charged a MEAF when I switched mortgage in 2006. I was told that I'd been charged £175, which was £100 more than I should have been and they'd send a cheque out to me. (Nice and easy, I thought.)

A letter arrived from them today saying they've investigated my complaint and as a gesture of goodwill they're going to reduce the charge to £40, which was the fee applicable when I took out the mortgage in 1996, and offering me the difference of £35 as settlement.

Should I write to them and ask them why they've changed their minds? If their original (verbal) statement of being charged £175 is correct, shouldn't I be due £135???

    Thanks,

    Iain

Yep, if you're unsure then simple ask for the reasoning behind their offer
  • Hi new to this.

Have had a read through but cant find what im looking for, so wonder if anyone can help? i split up with my partner and we completed the mortgage early, am i still entitled to as for MEAF back (or half of it) or am i unable to do this as it was a joint mortgage?

    Any advice would be great

    Thanks

Lenders may look at this differently, but you will probably be liable to half the refund if it is applicable
  • thank you - will give it a go! lets hope its good news
