Under sink water filer?

Unfortunately the water in my area is literally undrinkable, even filtered, out of the fridge and in juice the rank metallic taste still leaches through. Atm I'm forced to buy bottled water but am not happy doing this at all. A friend suggested an under sink filter which I should be able to fit myself (i.e. tell hubby how to do it
.
I don't know anything about them and was wondering if anyone had advice on quality and cost?

QVC sell them, so do Wickes, I can't vouch for the quality of the filtration though maybe someone else has used on. Cheaper to run that a Brita in the long run I guess.

Wickes don't sell many of them. They have a tap that you screw into the cold water pipe, that goes to a replaceable cartridge, which then goes to a "tap" that you stick next to your sink. Aesthetically, not bad, but as I said they don't sell many of them. They are very easy to fit, though.0

Have a look at Freshwater Filter Co. Ltd. https://www.freshwaterfilter.com (sorry don't know how to do a link). We bought our under sink filter from them about 12 years ago on hospital recommendation. Don't know how much the filters are now as we've still got the original one, but a replacement cartridge lasts 6 mths and works out at less than £2 per week - we use it not just for drinking water but also cooking, washing veg and I even use it for washing my face as our tap water is so heavily chlorinated it irritates your skin. Fresh Water Filter do a range of cartridges depending on what you want to filter out - we need heavy duty - think we must have the worst tap water in the country! I've found their customer service very good. too.
EDIT Should have added that these are very high quality filters - they don't just make the water taste good they filter out all the real nasties like pesticides, nitrates, etc.0 -
We have undrinkable tap water too - even when filtered. We eventually bought a wellness water carafe (http://sortlifeout.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=32&products_id=192)
It is a filter jug, but the Mercedes of the species and we have been delighted with it. Ok, so the filters aren't cheap, but my health gets prioritised on this one AND, as it isn't a permanent fixture, it comes with me when I move house
Just out of interest - the folk with the undrinkable tap water - what area are you in?0 -
we have one from this company http://www.pozzani.co.uk/ the cartridge lasts 6 months and costs £12 ish. its very easy to fit but you do have to drill a hole in the counter top for the tap.
we bought it from mfi, and get a reminder every 6 months to order a new filter from pozzani.0 -
Our water has so much chlorine it burns your eyes so when we did our kitchen 5 years ago we fitted one of these but there are plenty of different styles .They recommend changing the filter every 6 months but we changed it at Christmas last year ..it still filtered the water ok but the flow had slowed to a dribble. http://www.kitchensinksandtaps.co.uk/asp/product.asp?product=123

I no its slight off topic but you pay your water rates/water charges you shouldnt have to buy water because the water isnt drinkable. Perhaps the water company wants a good kick up the bum, rather than lining shareholders pockets that money should go in investment. if other companies can do it why are they not all supplying drinkable water?
My water company Yorkshire water replaced all the old pipes 2 years back, well what they actually did was line the old pipes with plastic piping. I never had a issue with water in my area.0 -
It's the level of chlorine in our water that is unbearable. My husband wretches when he flushes the toilet it's that bad.
Our eyes sting in the bath too and my dd's skin ends up red and blotchy after a bath (we don't use any products btw, so we know it isn't that)
But, otoh, when I think of people across the world who have to walk miles to get a bucket of water that is probably full of bacteria, I try not to complain too much
