Constant Car Problems - Help! Who's Liable?!

OP you need to remember that a car is made up of lots of components......
One bad person in a room full of people, doesn't make everyone bad.
Your problems are partially bad luck and partially ignoring faults that lead to bigger faults, either you or the garage. Loss of water will lead to headgasket failure, you should really (and I know most people are guilty too) be keeping a check on your levels (oil, coolant, brake fluid, etc etc).“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

How many miles has the car done?
TBH though almost certainly a car of this type was bought new to move heavy loads around or tow. The Renault engine in it is very unreliable and, as it has probably had a "hard life" is now going to cost you a fortune.
Sell it, move on and don't get a second hand work horse and expect it to be fault free.0 -

- Can I take Nissan to small claims court for £10k as the goods are clearly rubbish and arguably always have been; can it be irrespective that I am bringing it up now? I think this is the best idea as I need to know the full history of the vehicle.
- Can I take the air con service garage to court under negligence as they missed a significant problem when checking for air con issues?
- Do I argue that the place I bought it from, 2 years ago, were at fault for supplying faulty goods?
- Do I press for the vehicle to be written off and claim the market value on insurance?
I cannot go on with this car, it is a nightmare. Any advice is hugely appreciate.
I assume this is a pi$$take?
However, a thought on the aircon - maybe the aircon fan didn't come on due to some ECU sensor on the engine radiator when it was low on water?
Which is why when you refiled the engine radiator, everything sorted its self out? Which would explain why no mechanic ever, has heard of a water leak causing the aircon to fail?
Finally - when you do take everyone to court, please let me know so I can watch them all laughing you out of the place

Hi all - really looking for some guidance here. 2 years ago I bought a Nissan X-Trail from a dealer under the understanding it was in perfect order with no major issues. A month later, it was discovered that both brake pads and discs were illegal and needed replacing - they gave a "goodwill gesture", but the warning signs were there.
Whilst the worn discs perhaps should have been picked up during checks, they are a wear and tear item, and the dealer did replace them free.noofighter wrote: »
A good few months later I had issues with the air con. I took it to a Nissan dealer local to me who found nothing major wrong.
ok. Faults happen.noofighter wrote: »
Approx 2 or 3 months after this, having had a strange issue come up (went on a long journey, air con gave up, radiator was dry, filled that up, air con worked again, rinse and repeat), the head gasket gave out.
Sounds like you had a water leak which you didnt pick up on. Also, from a further post below, you added COLD WATER to a HOT and possibly OVERHEATING engine. This in itself could cause head gasket failure.noofighter wrote: »
Total cost of repair was over £2000 for a car that cost just over £8k a year previous. It left the repair shop again with faulty air con - all they did again was claim "nothing was wrong" and filled the gas up. Fast forward to last month and the air con wasn't working yet again. I've taken it to a specialist who has advised yet again that the head gasket is an issue so it has gone back to the Nissan dealer for repair again.
It also transpires that the car has had a turbo replaced under a previous owner (Nissan were contacted about this), though Nissan cannot divulge why this would be the case. I believe it is because the car has ALWAYS been faulty and I just happen to be the current victim.
So I've spent god knows how many hours and well over £10k on a dubious piece of machinery; what can I do?

No. its not nissans fault. there are many thousands of x-trails out there yours sounds like a combination of common wear and tear, the odd fault and neglect on your part to resolve a coolant leak causing head gasket failure.noofighter wrote: »

No. They checked the air con system. A coolant leak is not part of that.noofighter wrote: »

No. Its not unreasonable for a 7 year old car to need discs and they were replaced by the supplying dealer.
Air con issues are not uncommon.
Head gasket failure brought on by lack of coolant is not the dealers fault.noofighter wrote: »

No of course not. Insurance does not cover mechanical failure.noofighter wrote: »

I think you need to take some ownership here and not try to find someone else to blame, particularly the head gasket issue.
And really, in the grand scheme of things, i dont think this falls into the category of 'nightmare' - you need to regain a sense of perspective.0 -

Xtrails feature in non glowing terms on many motoring forums, modern Nissans are not like their excellent and durable vehicles of yesteryear (Bluebird anyone), possibly with the exception of Patrol.0 -

the 1.9 DCI ENGINE suffers injector faults thats it.
The petrol X-trails are decent cars, but I do keep hearing tales of unhappy diesel owners.
A few other faults noted here: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/nissan/x-trail-2001/?section=bad
Trying to be helpful to Xtrail owners, I notice that turbo technics make a more durable turbo http://www.turbotechnics.com/www/?p=2480 -
