interviews and possible redundancy

Hi,

I've been in my job 8yrs, working part time.
In march I applied for a job I'd really like, very exciting to me and possible good prospects if I go full time later on etc. Got an interview next week so really pleased.

Then I found out last week that current work place are making changes to the whole service and for lots of reasons I decided that I can't continue with them (even if I don't get the new job). I was going to hand my notice in but then They have put me at risk of redundancy. Consultation will last til the end of may and then I think I get notice of a week for each year..so 8wks.

The idea of working for them another 11 wks doesn't thrill me but guess I'd have to to get my redundancy. I could hand my notice in and go in 4wks but then I won't get redundancy.

They don't know I've applied for another job at all. But they are down for a reference if I get the job.
If I get it I'll have to tell them and ill still be in the consultation stage... not sure of the implications there?

Also, will the new place want me if I delay my start date to coincide with the redundancy of my current job?

I don't actually trust my current boss so I'm wary I may not get redundancy anyway for some reason they will decide to keep me.

I've told them I accept redundancy and don't want a month consulting.
Can it be done quicker? And I don't want the extended 8yr notice period, can I get it reduced?

I just want to finish :( but if I can do that and get the payment that would he wonderful. I could stay home with the kids a while on it if I didn't get the job I want, and any extra money in this financial climate is gratefully received!

  • You could ask for voluntary redundancy and if they want to do that then it could happen quickly. They can say no though.

Alternatively if you really just want to go and feel that they want rid of you too then you could ask them to pay you off - a months pay in lieu of notice and you will leave straight away (or similar).

If you got offered another job tomorrow and handed in your notice you would normally be expected to work your notice period. It could be negotiable but wouldnt automatically be cut short. By handing in your notice you would give up rights to redundancy pay.

If you get the job you want then forget about the redundancy money and move on. It's a small amount of money to give up in return for job security, job prospects and your peace of mind.
As God is my witness, as God is my witness they're not going to lick me. I'm going to live through this and when it's all over, I'll never be hungry again

Thanks, thats very true. If i get the job I will be thrilled and can give my 4wk notice to employers, work it knowing its coming to an end and move on eagerly :)

To be honest I suppose I'm feeling a bit like with how I'm treated over the changes I deserve the redundancy pay and want to make them pay me rather than wriggle out. I already had to fight for the risk of redundancy as they argued they weren't making major changes which they were...but its probably best to just let go.

was hoping there would be a law saying that if you get offered another job during consultation then the redundancy will still happen! Sigh if only the interview was a couple weeks away or if wed been in consultation a while longer so it ended before I had to tell them.
They are always changing meetings and end dates for things so it will never all tie in perfectly!

Thanks, its good to remember what's important in the main. Fingers crossed I get the job! :-)
