DLA - does anyone know if i can claim?

Hi,

Does anyone know of McArdles desease and if they do do you know of people that are claiming DLA for it?

I tried claiming last year but was turned down. I had a medical at my house and all the Dr asked me to do was bend down and touch my toes! Considering this illness affects my muscles during physical activity a quick touching my toes is no problem, my problem is walking, carrying things, and general activity that lasts longer than a few minutes!

I did appeal and was still turned down and I have noticed from reading this forum that there seems to be a real problem with the way the benefits are looked at.

Any advice would be appreciated.

  • If you feel that you qualify for DLA then reapply.

If you are refused on the first attempt ask your GP to have a reappraisal done with the help of an advisor from the CAB. It should then go through.

Did your GP support you in your initial application? It does help if you have your GP on side.

My bugbear was my rheumatologist - my GP said I needed to claim, the Rheumatologist said not to. That was March 06. In September 06 I gave in to my GP's nagging and applied, and was given DLA 5 weeks later - no interview, no medical, nothing.

The best thing to do is to search out any support groups/charities which specialise in McArdles desease, they should be able to advise you.

DLA is based on how much care you need through a normal day, if you need more than an hour you may qualify for the lower rate of care component. The more help you need the higher the rate. The same applies to the mobility component, There is lower and higher rate depending on how far you can walk and get around.

Try this to do at home, as it will indicate what, if any, DLA may be awarded:

If you do reapply, then your best bet is to get help from either the CAB or Welfare Rights to complete the form.

This support site has infomation on McArdles, and also a community forum, where you may get more support and information:
