No you will not need to pay this back. It is the responsibility of the company to pay your tax on your behalf if you are on PAYE ie they are giving you a wage/salary net of tax.
However you say you were a subcontractor so were you actually employed? if not then as a self employed person you are responsible for paying your own tax. I would speak to HMRC and see what there position is. It is not unusual for companies that go into liquidation to owe lots to HMRC for VAT and PAYE.:(:(0 -

Do your statements or receipts from the company show tax deducted at source?
If they do you will not have to pay any more. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

Every month the company should have submitted their monthly CIS return to HMRC so they should have full details of the tax deducted from you.
As far as I know it's irrelevant that the company haven't then paid that tax to HMRC, same would apply if you were paid under PAYE.
Just make sure you hang onto the monthly statements you received from the company as evidence just in case as if they have gone into liquidation owing a lot of tax it is possible they have not been fulfilling their obligations to do a monthly CIS return and your records will be invaluable in proving what you have been paid and deducted.
I worked for a firm that went into liquidation earlier this year and we were told that although we owed a lot of PAYE tax that employees tax deductions would still go on their records, so I would assume the same would apply to subbies.0 -
OP, why are you bumping your thread 3 months after starting it, without providing any more information?0
