You dont need to buy anything to get an Avatar T-shirt, you just need to create an Xbox account and setup your avatar.

But those of us with XBox Live accounts did not have to buy anything and not every freebie will be suitable for everyone. I feel much more comfortable about this being posted than the free sample of skincare/free sample of specialist food freebies from small companies that would send them into bankrupcy if they fulfilled them all (and my son appreciated the t-shirt thanks OP!)
