If you use 1kWh of solar electricity to heat your watertank, rather than exporting it, then another 1kWh of electricity needs to be generated.
This makes 600g or so of carbon, compared to the 300g or so it would have made if you'd just used the gas heating directly.

IMO, FIT should be - at least for new properties - only be paid fully on exported units, with at most a small payment for internal generation.

So, Solar Panels are a waste of time then and bad for the environment? And we are all putting £K on top of our roofs for the fun of it? What is IMO when at home?

Perhaps we should increase our Carbon because since we have started to reduce it, the sunshine has gone, not very good for the Solar Panelist.

Definition of 'O's = kWh/kWp (kWh = your daily & accurate Generation figure) (kWp = the rated output of your PV Panels).

    .

Not necessarily: if you switch when you install panels, your 1KWh of PV electricity is additional to existing capacity. You won't be "depriving" anyone of this since it wasn't previously available.

Are you misunderstanding the FIT regime? it comprises two parts - one "pays" for the capital cost of the installation and the other pays for the electricity exported. The misunderstanding may arise because, in the absence of smart meters, it is assumed that half of what is generated is exported. Anyone able to use more than half of what they generate gains if they don't have a smart meter. However, at 3.1p per KW, I dont see too many giving up their day jobs just yet!

Well said, I can understand that logic:rotfl:.

IMO = In My Opinion, also sometimes put as IMHO (Humble Opinion)

    Hello All,
Can anyone tell me if the installation of a smart meter could effect my FIT payments if it detects that I am using say 95% of what my PV system generates?

Our current FiT contract says the export units will be deemed at 50% of generaration. There's no mention of smart meters in the T&Cs, but I know they will be capable of measuring export and that the 50% deeming is only a temporary measure.

Temporary or not, our EDF contract stipulates the 50% deeming so any change from this in future would require a change of terms & conditions.

For us I think accurate export metering would be beneficial as we don't manage to use in excess of 50% of our generated electricity on average.

At the moment with this weather I am doing around 4 kWh per day; so I reckon that I am now using more than what I am generating with fridge and chest freezer on the go; plus the odd hot drink to keep me warm! So Eric, this is the way to achieve the 'holy grail' :rotfl:

Not quite, what we're really looking for is a really cold but long sunny day when we could generate nearly 40Kwh AND use all that with four loads of washing, a couple of dishwasher cycles, mowing lawn with an electric mower and running an immersion heater.

    Keep trying ! :j

Eric, you'd need to be taking a bath every hour to consume 40kWh in a single day on those appliances!

Did you notice the list he was pointing to at the beginning, citing a 'molton' carbon incinerator under his'relavant' work experience? :)
