Similarly, if staff must buy their own uniforms which are not suitable for use outside work, I would expect this to be allowed against taxable income. But it does need checking with HMRC.
Note that if the employee is taxed at 20% and spends £100, the tax allowance will rise by £100 but the tax paid will be reduced by £20.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Yes, as mentioned by a few people, it looks like having an embroidered logo on a top would constitute clothing expenses which could be reimbursed via a tax return: EIM32475 - Other expenses: clothing: uniforms. I will investigate this further. Thanks for those who pointed this out.0

Agreed £60 as per HMRC guidelines can be more.. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/EIM32712.htm
You beat me to it ;-)0 -
No for 2 reasons.
1. School uniform is not work wear.
2. Only your daughter would have been able to claim if 1 didn't apply but she would need a taxable income to claim against..
On a slightly different note, DS is on a programme led engineering apprenticeship and when attending the training centre he has to wear the provided PPE and overalls (as you would expect) but he has been told that 'he' (for he read me) has to bring his overalls home each week to be washed. As he has no income then he can't claim. Shame that it can't be offset against mine.

May have missed this but what happens when/if she leaves their employment? Will they ask for the uniform?0

I would get your wife to point out the security risk. If she buys the uniform she will keep it should she leave and then it could in theory be used to gain unauthorised access to the nursery.
However if nursery bought it then it could be returned when people leave.
I have heard of a company changed their policy when a member of staff picked up one of their logo'ed poloshirts from a local charity shop!
