I paid our mortgage off a month after my husband died, with a couple of endowment policies that paid out. I spent the rest of the day in the Garden of Remembrance sobbing my heart out.

Sorry for your loss and let this be a lesson to all of us, we are only here for a finite amount of time with little or not notice when it is our turn so yes lets pay into pensions and pay off mortgages but let us not forget the here and now either.

Signed my will. It was part of the financial settlement around my divorce, and my soon-to-be-ex husband had just threatened me with a professional hit.

I wasn't that worried-he'd be too scared of getting caught-but I made sure he wouldn't benefit from my death. Just in case.

Couldn't agree more. My mortgage was paid off as a result of a critical illness policy. But it took over 5 years of fighting my insurer whilst in declining health. (Mind you they paid up as soon as I got a solicitor involved)

I would much rather have good health and a mortgage, rather than very poor health and no mortgage. Never take good health for granted. If you have good health you have so many more choices.

In the 1990's I decided to go part time (working 4 days a week instead of 5) and in retrospect it was the best decision I ever made. Although we had less disposable income and less was paid into my pension, I had a good few years of 'extra' days when I was well enough to enjoy them.
It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

Unfortunately this seems to be the mantra of the DFWers before their 'light-bulb moment'. Obviously there is a balance to be kept, but it's more likely than not most people will reach retirement age. You're a long time poor when you're in your 60s and expected to live without a wage/salary for a further 20 years.
