My situation is that I live in England about 400 miles from family and friends (over the Irish Sea!). I have been employed at the same company for over 3 years on temporary contracts, with my current contract ending in 2013 (more than likely to be extended after this as well). There have been no gaps in employment.
I want to buy a property closer to home, which I obviously won't be living in until I move back. My other half already lives there so they would be in the property full time, and I would be there at least once a month to begin with.
I have found a house I am interesting in and I have at least a 25% deposit.
Obviously, I think I will become unstuck when I say I work in England but want to buy in a different country. In terms of affordability, taking into account my current rent, the figure on the Halifax calculator comes to above the amount I would need for a mortgage.
Any advice on getting a mortgage for a property in a different country, and long term temporary employment would be appreciated.
If I've left out any vital info that you need then let me know. Thanks for reading!

Hi there,
Sorry, still a bit early for me. You work in England (presume paid in Sterling £) and want to buy a house in Republic Of Ireland?
If so, would probably need a broker from there to arrange. If the boot was on the other foot and you worked in Eire and wanted to buy in England or Wales then I would be able to arrange, so assume it would work the other way...?
I have heard some stupidly, ridculous stories mind you about the manner in which mortgages are being handed out over there mind you so if this is the case, you may need to dig a bit deeper..
If I got wrong end of stick, apologies - at least your thread will go back to top and someone sensible may be able to help...I am a Mortgage Broker

Thanks Dave! No the property is in NI.
I've spoken to Halifax today who have said that as long as rent is taken into the affordability equation then it won't be a problem. Also as I've had continuous temporary employment at the same business for a number of years this also shouldn't be a problem, but we'll see how this pans out and if we can get an offer accepted.

Sorry, forgot to thank you previously! If I was to use a broker would it be better to use one in NI or England? Solicitor is in NI.0

Do you know Liam Neeson? I loved that movie where he pawnched that wolf in the face. Will you ask him if I can stay over at his place? We can watch that 45 second segment from the movie Taken where he says, 'I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you' on a continous loop for 8 hours solid. Then we can drink Kool-Aid and eat Pop Tarts and have a jolly old time.
Will you? I'm not insane. Doctor said so.0
