Blood Test.

Hi,
I had a blood test a couple of weeks ago as I was concerned that I have hypothyroidism. I have just phoned the doctors and have been told that my liver and kidneys are fine but the doctor wants to see me to review the full blood count. Does this mean they have found something? It can't be serious as it isn't until the 14th but I'm worried and google doesn't tell me much apart. From that anaemia would show up.
Thanks

My guess (and it is a guess) is that your result just showed as slightly outside of the 'normal' range. As you say, if the appointment's not till the 14th it shouldn't be anything urgent or serious. The thing is now to bide your time till then and try not to speculate or google too much! Easier said than done, I know..

It could be that because the bloods didn't show up a cause for symptoms they want to see you to decide if further tests are necessary. If it was something worth stressing over they'd have you in faster so try really hard not to worry about it.

Google is an evil thing sometimes so may be best avoided!

Definitely avoid google...more people are scared witless by self diagnosis on that thing. Full blood counts will tell the doc about your red and white blood cell counts, your haemoglobin, your platelets. Or he could also be meaning your blood chemistry - your salts and sugar levels, or other proteins etc found in blood...so he could want to see you about lots of different pretty minor things. And whatever it is you may only be just outside normal range for. If it was serious he wouldnt be waiting until the 14th to see you

Your appointment might not be until the 14th but it is with a doctor and s/he will have seen your blood test results. asking us lot is a pretty random way forward frankly.
If it was that serious you'd be seen more quickly.
    Try not to worry X

Same thing happened to me. I had many bloods taken and Doctor called me up yesterday to inform me that my bloods were back and to come in and see him. I refused to put the phone down without knowing what. It was my blood sugar, I am on the verge of diabetes. :(

    Good luck

Thank you all, I will try to avoid google and I guess its a good sign that it can wait 2 weeks and also the fact they didn't call me is a good sign surely.
Thank you again and I hope everything goes ok for you, darlyd

rachel90 a blood test is very sophisticated now and can tell your GP all sorts of things depending on which individual tests were done BUT they are like a snapshot of what was going on in your body at the time. Some issues will resolve themselves. You might for example have an infection in your body and that will show up - doesn't mean it will be serious. One time I had high a high potassium level never seen before or since. GPs use blood tests a lot more now as a routine aid to diagnosis.

For example if you go to your doc and tell him/her you feel run down, there are lots of things that can cause that. The GP can get your blood tested for iron, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, hormone abnormalities, infection. anaemia - all sorts.

    It's just a routine thing.

daryld.. I have type 2 diabetes and when I was diagnosed I got the standard NHS advice that says eat plenty of starchy carbs at every meal. and had drugs shoved at me straight away. What really works (and there are now lots of medical research studies to confirm this) is low carbing ie cutting down the sugar and carbs. I went down from size 22 to size 16 and from 4 drugs to 2 by doing this. If you have questions suggest you visit the low carb thread and then we can all explain why it works and the links to medical research.

It may just be that they need a result not covered by the original test. The website labtestsonline will give you some idea of what is covered. Don't try self-diagnosis it's rarely helpful.

Low carb is exactly what I am doing within ww points so I can still have that treat on a sat night without worrying. I will still have potatoes only on a Sunday. I am also eating plenty of veg, salad and a banana a day ( I do not like other fruit unless it's cooked).

    I will get there.

I often look on the low carb thread for ideas..

I have had a barrage of blood tests over the last year with lots of anomolies BUT the one thing I was told early on was that they generally repeat specific test if something is found to make sure it is not just a blip. A few things that can affect the blood is the time of day the sample was taken and what/when you have eaten. I had to go back for low blood sugars and they did a fasting test which was then normal. I then had one for cortisol which came back low but when redone in the morning came back in the normal range. (I pushed for a short synthecyn?? test and that categorically showed I was normal). On the positive side the latest tests have shown I am post menopausal and vitamin D deficient :D
