Arrival Drinks Question

I also have never heard of whiskey being offered as an arrival drink. All the recent weddings we've attended it has been bucks fizz, kir royale, champagne/sparkling wine or pimms. If it was a choice between whiskey and vodka I would choose vodka as I don't like whiskey but to be honest I wouldn't want spirits before I'd eaten so would probably just have orange juice or do without.0

we're putting money behind the bar, and everyone can have whatevery they want for their arrival drink! Doing the same for the toasts. OH doesn't drink wine, or bucks fizz, or champagne - or anything apart from lager or the occasional spirit on a big night out. I know he feels bad when attending functions and is offered a free glass of something, and refusing and slopes of the the bar to get his pint...so we are letting everyone have what they want! (within reason - venue has been told no doubles, no expensive malts etc!).0

Have never heard of it but whisky sounds like a nice idea. Vodka just sounds odd.
My preference would be Bucks Fizz, whisky, orange juice (as long as it had no bits in it) then vodka.0 -
When I clicked on this thread I was really surprised to see the two options as vodka and whiskey! If they were the two options and I was a guest I'd decline both. I think for an arrival drink they are both a bit too strong! Once people have had something to eat then let them buy the strong stuff but for an arrival drink I think bucksfizz or non alcoholic punch or something is much better. Just something to get people into the reception spirits, not get them off their faces! We are having pimms and jugs of pimms on the table, something light to go down not heavy like whiskey!Married my wonderful husband on 8/9/12 :j0

We are going to have bottled beer as an option at our drinks reception, as a lot of my family (male and female) would prefer this to the Pimms/Elderflower cocktail we will be having. However I'm fairly confident that they would drink whatever was put in front of them if they weren't paying for it! :rotfl: I went to a wedding last week and the arrival drink was Kir Royale, which the men and women were all drinking (it was a choice of this or orange juice, or go to the bar and buy something else!)
With the champagne/cava thing... I'm tempted to go for cava or prosecco instead of champagne at my wedding, purely because of cost. I like the taste of champagne, but I also really like prosecco as it is bit sweeter. I certainly wouldn't turn down any of them if they were put in front of me! A few weddings I have been to, after the toasts I often see a lot of abandoned half drunk glasses of champagne where people have only had a sip with the toast, and I always shudder to think how much of a waste it is!MFW 2016 #32 £1574.66/£1500:j:j0 -
Not that I can see. We're having Prosecco for ours and it tastes lovely, not quite as dry as Champagne but still wonderfully fizzy. Where are you planning on buying it from?lisajane8482 wrote: »
My uncle has told my mum and nana to buy bottles of champange for the toast (we are buying our own and paying corkage). I know he has the money to buy champagne but the MSE in me is thinking of buying cava instead.
Is there any real difference, except the obvious price difference?0 -
I think as long as you like the champagne/ cava it doesn't matter. We were choosing between a champagne and a cava, the champagne at twice the price. While we did actually prefer the champagne (we did a blind taste test), we couldn't tell which was champagne and which was cava. In the end we ended up goin with the cava, because we didn't like the champagne that much more to justify spending twice the money on it.
And the cava was delicious too!:T0 -
It has usually been whisky or wine with a soft drink as an alternative as an arrival drink at those weddings I've been at that have had one. I always take the whisky especially if a good malt.
However it's entirely up to you, although I wouldn't know what is the preference of most people so would play safe with whisky.
Just to point out Scotch whisky doesn't have an 'e'!

I'm not sure I would like either whisky or vodka before the meal.
I'm giving 100 Pimms and 100 Alcoholic Fruit Punch for the 50 guests so they get to choose which 2 they would like.
For the champagne, I have quite a few guests who are in the champagne business so they would have been able to taste the difference.
I also hate dry wine or champagne and MIL hates sweet wine or champagne and we found a champagne that we both really like. If you wait for the half price deal which seems to come on a few times a year then you can get it for £15 a bottle.

I would also find it very wierd to be offered any of them. Have you thought about having Pimms instead? Ok its not to everyones taste but its better to be offered that rather than strong alcohol such as Whiskey and Vodka. I would be happy with either Pimms or Bucks Fizz x
