Arrival Drinks Question

I’ve been looking at our arrival drinks and thinking about what we are having.

For our arrival drinks we were originally just going to have bucks fizz, orange juice for the non-drinkers and fruit shoots for the kids but after talking with our co-ordinator she suggested providing whiskey for the men and bucks fizz for the women. Only thing is looking at our guest list we have more vodka drinkers than whiskey drinkers so was contemplating swapping the whiskey for vodka.

I ran the idea past my OH, my mum and nana. OH was happy with this as he is one who wouldn't drink the whiskey, my mum said she thought it a good idea. My nana however said that whiskey is traditional as an arrival drink for the men and they might find it strange and I should stick with whiskey. I personally can't see the problem since the main of them drink vodka anyway and those that I know would drink whiskey (3 out of 30) would generally drink camel pee if it had a alcoholic content :rotfl:

Would you find it strange if you were offered vodka instead of whiskey?

Would you be happy with vodka rather than whiskey for your arrival drink? 19 votes

No, but I would find it strange if I was offered whiskey! It tastes like burning! :rotfl:

I would much rather have vodka than whisky, although I would much rather have bucks fizz thank vodka.

Were you happy with the buck fizz before the wedding co-ordinate suggested whisky? Because I think for an arrival drink bucks fizz is fine.

But between vodka n whisky- Vodka wins!

    Just my penny's worth tho!

Personally, I'd find it strange to be offered anything other than bucks fizz.
Most of my guests were tipsy off that before we even sat down to eat, I dread to think what would have happened if there'd been spirits involved!!

But anyway, I hate whiskey, I'd prefer vodka but not straight!

    Hi,

I've said i'd be happy with Vodka as I don't like whisky, but i've never heard of either been served as the arrival drink. However looking at your location i'm guessing this may be a scottish thing?(Could be wrong) Only ever heard of bucks fiz, champagne or pimms to be honest. We are having bucks fitz & champagne with pomegranate. However back to your question you know your guests & if they don't like whisky then don't have it, go with the vodka or stick with the bucks fiz:D

I guess its a personal preference thing and you know your guests better than we do....but personally I would opt for the bucks fizz or something like pimms or a lighter drink than a spirit drink....faced with either whisky or vodka...I would probably ask for the fruit shoot!!

I can see that the groom might need a stiff drink before the wedding with the other men attending perhaps, but ive never heard of the guests being offered a spirit drink following the wedding at a reception arrival...

I'd only offer champagne/cava/prosecco or buck's fizz too.

To be honest I've only personally ever heard of whiskey as an arriaval drink after a funeral but thought that the co-ordinator knows more than I do so just go with it.

We're not that close to Scotland so I don't think it's a location thing, although if I remember correctly the North East apparently has a high rate of binge drinkers so perhaps it is ;)

I know most of the men in my family would prefer vodka to bucks fizz as they are "hardend drinkers" (as they call themselves) but the rest I'm not sure of, I certainly know OH doesn't fall into that catogory.

I think I may leave this decision up to the OH, at least then if everyone is a little tipsy before they even sit down I can blame him :rotfl:

Same here but I'm from down south so may not be up on the traditions from other areas.

As a male who is known to enjoy more than the odd whisky, I'd opt for the bucks fizz.
I've attended a few weddings over the years both North and South of the border and have never been offered spirits as a welcome drink. Champagne (and its clones) white wine, kir royale, bucks fizz and sherries at various times. The only times I can recall being offered spirits was whisky instead of port after the meal on one occasion and for toasts a couple of times.
Being a cynic, I wonder if this is a way to increase the price - presuming they charge more for spirits than for bucks fizz.

I would find it odd to be offered anything other than bucks fizz, Wouldnt it be alot more expensive to offer Vodka aswell?

I'm so glad that I'm not the only person who thought that whiskey was strange. My OH, mum and nana seemd to think it was normal. I think my aunt and uncle had whiskey for men thinking about it, I wonder if that is why she mentioned it (they had there reception where we are having ours). When I get home I'll be looking through their wedding photo's to see if my memory is correct.

They're charging us £1.75 for the bucks fizz and £2.00 for the whiskey (I assume this is for house whiskey but could be wrong)

On a different note, drinks related though.

My uncle has told my mum and nana to buy bottles of champange for the toast (we are buying our own and paying corkage). I know he has the money to buy champagne but the MSE in me is thinking of buying cava instead.

Is there any real difference, except the obvious price difference?

I did get a bottle of each for my birthday and if I had been blindfolded and told to guess which was which I would honestly not have been able to tell the difference.
