Advice re closing date, please

good morning
a friend WAS about to apply for a new post in her school, closing date advertised as 4-05-12. She arrived at work yesterday to find that not only had the advert been withdrawn but a new teacher has already been appointed.
Very cross about this as she has worked hard over the application form and had e-mailed it in on Friday last week!
Is the school allowed to do this? (bearing in mind that they have already gone and done it!)
many thanks

Unless there is some discrimination against a protected charateristic (and considering she hasn't applied yet it is highly unlikely) then yes.The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!

Does the employer have a recruitment policy? If so, I'll bet my bottom dollar the policy doesn't provide for this and as such the appointment may not be compliant.
Those responsible for the appointment will be accountable to someone, your friend may wish to reflect on whether to ask questions (this may or may not rebound - I don't know the organisation - someone may be horrified at events) or let it go and stew.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -

So was she (a) about to apply or (b) had she applied?
Did the advertisement terms include one about being able to close for applications earlier if they receive a sufficient number?
If she did apply last Friday, was the response to her application the statement that somone had been appointed?0 -
Good advice is to apply the second the advert is out next time. Nothing illegal about closing it early.Debt free 4th April 2007.

hi
thanks all for replying.
She had sent in her form last Friday night, so a week in advance of the closing date. I'm sorry about not being clear--I meant that she was TRYING to apply for the job!
She had received only an auto reply and was told in person on Monday by the head of department that they had already appointed.
I dont know about a recruitment policy, but being a big secondary school I am sure that they have one.
There was nothing in the ad about it closing early for any reason.
What has upset her the most was that she was told by the head of department to apply--in fact he made a point of calling her aside and telling her about the job, and was still talking about it last week. He must have been aware by then that they had already appointed somebody else.
As ohreally has said, even if they have acted outside of the policy, making a fuss might not improve thingsLBM-2003ish

Ok, still trying to be clear :
In a nutshell - your friend works in a school. There is a vacancy in that same school and your friend was asked to apply. In the meantime, the job has been offered to another candidate ?
I get the impression that this type of thing goes on in schools / local government etc. all the time, whereby there is often a favoured candidate (who invariably gets the job) but they have to be seen to be going through a selection process.
Unfortunately, it sounds as though your friend was never in the frame for the job, and making a fuss about recruitment policy in the school where she currently works will not increase her chances of being the favoured candidate the next time a vacancy comes up.
I am not saying that this is right or wrong, but is reality.0
