You didn't or can't read. Your complaint is useless. When you register with next you are applying for credit account, you can't opt out. From the help section it says
"If you would like to order without a Next Directory account you can call us with your details on 0844 844 8000* 24 hours 7 days a week and pay by credit or debit card at the time of order."
There is no opt out when you register online, you can't read.0 -
A few months ago my wife and were searching for a particular piece of furniture and we found it online with Next. I started to buy it but got concerned when I thought I was getting asked to start up a credit agreement. To be fair, I was confused during this part of the process, as I was all set to pay by debit (or credit, can't remember) card.
I remember talking to my wife, asking her if I was going mad thinking I was being pushed down a credit route when I just wanted to pay immediately! She, quite rightly, said that if I doubted the process then stop. I did.
We visited their local (10 miles) store a few days later and ordered the furniture. I asked the lass if I'd have to take out a credit agreement and she laughed and said just use your card. Which I did. Furniture is great - happy
My rambling point is that I, like the second to OP, was very confused by their online policy, and I'm not surprised that people are fooled by it.0 -

I assure you I can read.
The point I am making is that their site is deliberately misleading. I was under the assumption that the box that said something along the lines of do not set me up for a next directory account meant that I would go through to pay by card.
I have no intention of using next online again, I am sure that is clear.
I think it is unfair that companies can do this to people, especially companies such as maristoa which is only available online. Maristoa claims that "Our most popular payment method is with a Personal Account." as justification for making people go through a check, at least this site made it clear on their TV advert at the bottom of the screen.
The reason I started this thread is because I want to do something about this, why should online retailers get to operate under different standards? Stylistpick will keep taking £40 a month from your account after your first order, which you may spend on any item. If you do not use it in that month you are given a token to use, until you cancel the service I presume. I think rules like this are unfair.
People go online because it is convenient and often cheaper, it seems like companies are finding a way to make some more money without increasing their prices. Giving people credit accounts so they overspend.0 -
I voted for mum of the year and got a £10 off voucher at next.
When I tried to use it I saw in the t&c's that it meant I had to have a credit check so did not use it. I gave the code to someone on here who already had an account.
I will never use next online for that reason. I always read the t&c's when ordering online.Life is not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.0 -
Next is just one example of this practice.
Nearly all of the television advertisers selling online/mail-order mens', womens' and childrens' clothing have the notice at the bottom of the screen regarding credit checks.0
