Is it ok to ask how the company are doing in this financial climate,i.e. is the order book full when at interview.
I only say this as an interview i had last week the interviewer(owner) admitted unasked by me, that the company was struggling, but i was interviewing as a replacement.

I guess it depends to some degree what the role you are going for is.
Personally, if you are doing something like sales, strategy, change management etc you can word the question so it is directly relevant and not too "personal" (cant think of the right word).
If you are going for a job as office cleaner it is certainly going to be a difficult question.
Personally I wouldnt have a problem answering the question if an interviewee was to ask me but I would say you do need to be a little wary of who you're asking and what their likely knowledge level is. If you worked for RBS immediately prior to the credit crunch everything you heard was positive, even as it initially started the senior management were telling staff the problems were the other banks but RBS is ok, even after the news reported RBS wasnt ok it was then said by senior management that they possibly hadnt been 100% honest but it wasnt as nearly as bad as the press were saying (then of cause the government had to buy 80% to stop if sinking)0 -
I have asked in interview if they have made anyone redundant in the last 2 years.0

I have asked the interviewer if she wears underwear. Despite claiming it's a joke right after, I think she decided to boot me out at that moment.0 -

I am serious. If they can ask you if you have been fired why can you not ask them if they have made anyone redundant? I'd like to know.0 -
Well you can ask whatever you like, but at the end of the day they don't have to give you the job do they.0

Do the research so you can ask the question in context of some publicly know information.
eg
I see(source) profits have been flat for the last two years what is being done to turn this round?
Some questions are best left till there is an offer on the table.0
