*The Palace of Holyrood -more for the adults but has a brilliant bloodstain on the floor in Mary Queen of Scots bedroom, where David Rizzo was murdered hundreds of years ago.

They actually admitted a few years ago that it's no longer Rizzio's blood which had disappeared years and years ago but it is still the spot he was murdered, you could always go and see his grave in the Canongate kirkyard. I've always told people that the Castle is at the top of the mile and the palace at the bottom, it's easier for people who don't know the lay out of Edinburgh, giving tourists who only have a couple of days here to much information just confuses them when they have so much to try and see, much much easier to keep it simple.

This may be useful, there is a 15% discount if you buy the tickets in May

    hi
coming up to edinburgh in august on a tight budget with 2 kids, has anyone seen any vouchers for the zoo, camera obscura or the real mary kings close please. or have any suggestions for anywhere good to take a 10 & 12 year old for a few hours TIA x

If you're a Tesco shopper you can use their clubcard "days out" vouchers for the Camera Obscura (or you could last I checked at least).

Somone else mentioned the Museum on the Mound, I have been & yes it's well worth a visit, it's set up by one of the big banks & is all about money. There are various interactive bits for kids (a safe to open, amongst other things), and a million pounds in cash on display which has a certain "wow" facor. I think it's slightly ironic that this museum (of all of them) is free :D

In August it will have great atmosphere... but be very overcrowded & overpriced. You win some, you lose some!

Not been on a bus for ages but they sometimes have money of offers on the back of them
  • I'd second the idea of using the Edinburgh pass, http://www.edinburgh.org/pass/. These used to come with a Lothian bus pass but, sadly, you now have to buy these separately if required. You will probably only need the one or two day pass. Concentrate on the attractions in the city centre as, even with a car, the day is simply not long enough to get around to see the others that are further out.
It would probably benefit you to plan your day(s) in advance so that you can walk between the attractions and time the entrance to things like the underground tours.

At the moment there's £6 off entry to Edinburgh Dungeons on the back of bus tickets. Don't know if your kids would like something scary or not? :)
