Are HMRC not aware of pension dates?

I did my wifes tax return for 11/12. Her only income is interest on savings which just exceeds the personal allowance, thus the bulk of tax is claimed back. Not a problem.

However, my wife was 60 in Dec 11 and because of the sliding date arrangement her state pension is not payable until July 13.
But HMRC amended the tax return and sent us its calculation which included the State pension from her birthday until the 5 april. They stated that we had "not declared the amount".
Again not a problem as I will put them right on the matter.

But before I do am I missing anything here? HMRC are surely aware of when people start receiving the state pension from their DOB?

maybe they have her DOB recorded incorrectly or just a mistake

    phone them up and discuss.

Good Luck with ringing HMRC to correct their mistakes.
Their delays and errors have reduced me to tears.

Is there a connection between a self assessment tax return and a notice of coding or does one also have to correct one's notice of coding over the phone/letter?

A self assessment tax return would normally result in a revised tax code being issued, where appropriate.

Interesting as, as of this morning, I was of the view that HMRC has no idea of the new state pension rules. A client's wife was 60 in March 2011 but only started to receive the state pension in September 2011. A full years pension had been included in 2011/12 code number which, obviously, was wrong.

I was told this morning that the tax code was correct because 'women received the pension at 60 and men at 65 and it had been that way for years'. The tax code was correct.

After gently pointing out that this was not the case my 'advisor' consulted with a colleague who assured her that she was correct (??). Eventually I spoke to a more senior person and it was resolved.

Could be an interesting few years for new pensioners.

You can defer claiming your state pension though, can't you ? So just because someone becomes theoretically eligible for one, it doesn't necessarily follow that they will actually be receiving it yet.

And, in my day, a P46 DHSS was sent to the Inland Revenue to notify of the start of the state pension and the amount.

But now that they are one and the same organisation ......

Don't think so, the SS part of DHSS is now the DWP, and the DH part is (not surprisingly) the DH:

    ......... they send a P46 DWP. ;)

However ...... that is in the process of change. According to the Office of Tax Simplification 'Review of pensioner taxation'
As a result of a joint working initiative between HMRC and the DWP, the OTS understands that HMRC plans to automate the P46DWP process for state pension recipients from October 2012. The project includes an electronic interface with the DWP on which state pension information will be passed to HMRC for all new recipients.
