Tax code? 810L or 741L?

Got my wage slip today and alot of people found their Tax code to be 810L, Mine on the other hand was 741L.

I queried this with my Finance team and they said:

"Tax codes vary greatly from person to person, last year your code was 678L, I had instructions to increase everyone on an 'L' code by 63 points which takes yours to 741L"

Is this correct?

Thanks,

Normal code for last year was 747, so that was diferent too.

Do you have any perks of the job, ie medical insurance, car etc.
    This would bring it down.

You should have had a notice of coding in the post from HMC to say how your code was worked out.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

  • Last year I was working for a different employer and had BUPA. This year (Jan onwards) I do not get these benefits. Just standard wage.

This happened to me. If you receive taxable benefits your company is required to send a certain form to the IR, but if you don't the company doesn't have to send anything. The IR then roll the benefits over.

Call up your tax office (should be on some paperwork or your HR should be able to give you details). They'll amend your code as appropriate and the inform your HR, and will return any moneys they may owe you.

Although at this time of year, you may be on the phone for a long time - they're quite busy!

I would make sure you let the tax office know you aren't getting BUPA any more - I was paying extra tax most of last year after I changed companies, totally oblivious! Then I had a tax code notification and saw I was paying too much. I phoned them up and got it back in my next pay packet.

As above. The employer doesn't make up the tax code, they merely apply what IR have notified them to apply so if there's a change or it is different it is because IR have told them to alter it.
