High Blood Pressure

I went to the Dr recently about one thing and at the visit he decided to take my blood pressure because it hasn't been measured in years.
It was way to high and he took blood tests which have now told him my liver, kidney, thyroid, sugar and cholesterol (5.2) are all ok but my weight is the problem and so he has now just started me on Ramipril.

Now I'm 51yrs old, 5'4", 14st and female and a repeat dieter who gains and loses weight frequently but with hypertension in my family I do realise I really need to get my finger out and do something.
I'll probably try low carbing again because I seem to have the most success with it but I'm looking guidance on the best choice of supplements someone of my weight and age should take. I've read that Vitamin D3 can be usefull when combating hypertension but can anyone point me in the direction of other things I might need to take and a UK (preferably) website where I can source the supplements?

Thanks

pam i'm going through similar stuff just now, i am a bit younger than you (39) but i weigh more (15st 7 roughly) and am shorter (5ft1) but my Bp was recently 135/105 the 135 not being high but the 105 really high

have you thought about garlic, quinoa and brown rice etc ... there are plenty of foods that will help your Bp to lower naturally
  • losing weight will definitely help - I had high blood pressure two years ago, verging on needing medication for it, I also had a BMI of 37...

now, I have lost almost 5 stone, and have a BMI of 27, my blood pressure is spot on!!

Vit D3 may also help (I take Healthy Origins from BigVits) - I believe there is evidence that omega 3 fish oil can help.

To be honest I didn't know about the quinoa or brown rice.

I read something on here quite a while ago about the benefits of vitamin D but I can't find it when I do a search.

I might try the omega 3 oils too. Should I be taking evening primrose oil? I don't know what it does but I know a few women who take it at my age.

    Thanks for the links :)

My mother has just been diagnosed with high BP and she's not overweight and a vegetarian. Having said that she's a bit of a carb addict and adds lots of salt to food.

I nudged her to https://www.bpassoc.org.uk Blood Pressure Association.

A book I'd recommend borrowing from library is Healing Foods Miriam Polunin which has masses of info on jealth benefits of various foods.

There's a low carb support group here on MSE and we're very friendly.
Dr Briffa always seems to give sound advice - I bought his book Waist Disposal for OH and ended up reading it myself.

    Best wishes

stumbled accross this when about to post about something else.
Have developed high blood pressure discovered on once a year check. Quite sad as have always been the standard 120/70 but now, at 66, have suddenly become about 160/95
Have now been checked twice and am going to have an ambulatory monitor. Am totally puzzled about the rise because I have no familial risk factors, excercise regularly and have a pretty perfect diet. I at 5ft 3' and weigh between 8 and 8 and a half stone.
There seems no indication on the Blood Pressure Assoc website that vitamin D will help and I take a balanced vitamin/mineral tablet daily anyway
It looks like I will have to go on medication, my GP says its just age but seems a bit sudden! Is anyone else in this sort of situation and do they take tablets.

Money lover that's what happened to me ( except i weigh much more) my Bp has always been stable till very recently... Then it just flew up ... The Dr wants to put me on beta blockers and whilst i am not refusing to go on them i have requested a 24hr monitor to be fitted to get a more balanced reading

If it is still high i will go onto the tablets with the proviso that it is looked at again after 6months ... I would rather have control of my Bp via diet. Than tablets tbh as i am aware of alot of the side effects ... My aim would be to get a more nutritionally balanced diet and to loose weight and become more active ( i am currently working towards these goals) and come off my tablets for an alloted period then be tested again for a 24 hr period and take it from there

I wish you well in dealing with your Bp ... If i can help in anyway please feel free to contact me

Sorry for spelling i"m on my phone

    Hello,

I was put on Beta Blockers several years ago because my BP was stubbornly high, but then I was also 5 stone overweight (at 5ft 4in) and a heavy drinker of the old vino :o.

Last year, I had had enough. I stopped drinking, changed my job to a much more physically demanding one and only ate when I wanted to. I lost the five stone. GP has stopped my BP tablets and I tick along at a very respectable 130/65 now.

I'm 41 now, and REALLY wish I'd woken up to what I was doing to myself ten years earlier, but better late than never eh?

Give yourself a year to shift the weight, OP - don't be too hard on yourself, and if your deadline is a year, a couple of slips here and there shouldn't damage your long term progress.

    Good Luck :D
