form p87

i'm a community carer and i have just filled in my p87 form.

i don't get any mileage help from my employer my figures are:

total business miles 7437

@45p = 3346.65

do any of you know how much i'm likely to get back?

    if you are 20% tax payer then you are due 20% of 3346 = £669

    Generally - if you earn less than £42475.
    If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

    Indeed ....... but that creates issues, I'm afraid.

    You can't get tax relief for more tax than you've paid. If you earned £9861 ..... then you would have paid tax on (£9861 - £7475 =) £2386. Your P60 should show tax of around £477? Which would be the most you could expect back.
    If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

    the amount you have calculated- you can claim 45pence/mile and get that amount back tax free--

    so i've just got a letter from hmrc informing that i will soon get a notification from them to do a self assement online.

    any idea why?

    feel quite worried about this

    Because your expenses are above £2500? I would guess. See the link below.

    I wouldn't be worried about the SA Return. Do it online (you need to register first) and it's the cleanest way to claim. But - you may need to do the 1st one on paper.

    err, no, you can claim the TAX on 45p per mile, a rather smaller figure.
