Nationwide or Barclaycard Initial Best - After 6 yrs BR

Hello all,
Finally my BR is off my credit reports, as it's been over 6 years. I have almost checked them all, I will be 100% sure they are clear before I apply for a credit card. On my credit report there is just a long standing mobile contract, and some basic bank accounts, all with green ticks.
I was thinking of going straight to Nationwide to apply for their basic credit card, as I have my main current account with them which has money paid in every month and a history of 6 years. [I should add I am applying for a card to build up my credit rating, by spending a little each month and paying off in full by direct debit.]
On the other hand I was wondering about Barclaycard initial, as it is more of a sub-prime card than Nationwide I think. (Although Nationwide ask for a minimum of £5k per year income whereas Barclaycard ask for a minimum of £10k per year, which seems to indicate Barclays are more choosy in that respect). I have a dormant current account with Barclays, ... but they were one of my creditors. I don't know if that means they'll never take me on for a credit card again.
I emailed Nationwide and asked if it was advisable to apply with no other credit history on my file, and all they said was there is a £5k income per year requirement. I think it was a customer service person filling out a form though, not a response backed up by experience of what actually happens with Nationwide applications.
So, I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with these two providers, getting a credit card with no credit history? Which would be better for me to go for?
I did apply for Capital One during my BR while discharged but still on my credit file, and they rejected me. They were one of my creditors. I could apply to Vanquis but I was just thinking, as the 6 years are up maybe I'd have a chance to get accepted straight away by one of the more "prime" card providers.
Any advice much appreciated!
Thanks a lot,
Izzy

Izzy, think it's best to sort out your credit file first. Make sure its clean.
Not sure what is the best to go for and who excepts who, not there myself yet.

Thanks a lot If Wishes, I appreciate it!
Yes, the credit file checking is ongoing at the moment, no major problems, just ironing out the chinks before applying.
I'm really just planning ahead, as all being well I might be able to make my card application in 1-2 weeks.
I'd love to hear if anyone else has experience getting a Nationwide or Barclaycard Initial after their BR has dropped off ...0
