Right to Search

I am an employer implementing a right to search policy and I am looking for suggestions on how to fairly select staff and the items that will be searched when leaving the premise.

One I idea I came up with is based on "Wheel of Fortunes" whereby someone on duty spins the wheel with all employees names on it, and then another wheel will be spun with searchable items (ie. handbag, jacket, car).

The other idea I had was similar but with a deck of cards, again, all employee names and another deck with searchable items.

Do you work for a company that has a search policy, how do they do it? Any ideas would be greatly received.

:)

Would the policy not simply state you reserve the right to search employees or their property without any given notice, and that selection will be made either on a random basis or if you have cause for suspicion? I am unsure why you are bringing it in, but if you feel people are pinching stuff you would need to ensure the policy allowed you the flexibility to search those you felt may be responsible.

My personal thought is that a random system based on a random selection of employee numbers may be the easiest way to do something like this

You're absolutely correct. The policy does clearly state that any employee can be searched including vehicles without any given notice.

I work for a branded organisation and apparently this policy is untapped. Managers have been tasked to come up with ideas on how to fairly implement the policy within their business on a routine basis, and to ensure that the selection process does not victimise anybody in particular. All searches are documented and I understand that the records could easily be used to monitor victimisation but we need to come up with a selection process...

No idea about searches, but my employer occasionally does drugs and alcohol screening at some offices/places of work, they do it without warning and screen everyone there the same day.
I don't know if something similar would work for searching people, that you could do it less often but when you do you could search everyone to avoid any accusations of singleling people out.

Do you have to select, could you not just pick a random day / shift and search everyone that particular day, that is the fairest way.

I have previously had to do random searches and found the quickest easiest way was a bag of marbles all the same colour except two of different colours, one for bag search and one for vehicle search. Everyone took one on the way out and then did we the searches. Just try and ensure whichever way you use its just quick if everyone's waiting to go home.

What is the actual purpose of the search?

I wouldn't publicise the method to be used for selection but it could be on a random basis normally but targeted if necessary. Managers have the right to manage.

For the random method, I'd have a numbered list of employees and small pieces of card with the numbers on. Put those in a bag and draw out as many as you want.

Why not if possible search everyone at the end of the day or just us a scanning wand.

    Aren't the staff trusted?
