Pension Fund Performance

I spent some time today working out the return of my pension fund (Money Purchase scheme). So from 1990 to today’s date, using the Excel XIRR, my Annual Rate of Return was 6.1%. How do you think my pension fund has done? I have been invested in funds, over time, such as:

SSgA UK Equity Index Fund
SSgA International Equity Index Fund
SSgA Consensus
Standard Life Global Eq
Standard Life UK Equity
Standard Life Oversea Equity
Standard Life Managed
Scottish Equitable WP
SSgA Corp Bond
Resolution Managed
Schroder Managed

6.0% a year after charges is pretty good going but it really depends on the funds you were invested in

If it was lots of risky stuff - small companies, emerging markets you did pretty poorly - you should have expected more

If was just a regular mix of equity and bond funds you did okay

6% a year after charges is pretty good but as you get closer to retirement you should move to less risky funds so your return will drop

The return looks pretty reasonable - my retirement was planned assuming 4% return. Particularly interesting to me is that you seem to be solely investing in unspectacular very broadly based funds.

Out of interest, what rate of return have you got more recently, say in the past 10-12 "exciting" years?
  • I believe the funds listed are on the low side, but a little middle risk, so very much average funds.

So running the XIRR function for the value of the fund in 2002 to today gives me only 4.3%.

I surpose that's not bad given the state of last 10 years.?
