Smelly Vacuum

Options
Hey guys, wondered if anyone can help me out here.

My vacuum ( upright D***n ball) kind of smells when I use it. It's not 'bad' but it's annoying. The smell does not linger, it's only about while the machine is on.

I do wash the machine + filters, but it's just not practicle to be washing the whole thing each week. But, if I have to, then I will.

I'm assuming the smell is due to the 'dust' created when I hoover up cat littter that has escaped the litter tray. Trays are cleaned daily and washed twice weekly.

I have seen little sachets sold by some conpanies that you can put in the hoover bag - assuming I cant use those with my 'bagless' machine, but not sure? TBH, they are also quite expensive so would like a more MSE way of addressing the issue.

All advice appreciated - and please don't suggest getting rid of the cats or the litter trays, that aint gonna happen
:D

Thanks
Scrappie:p

washing the hoses and bits you can remove might help.. vacuuming a spilled bottle of essential oil worked wonders on mine.. could maybe try a few drops of essential oil on a tissue or rag.. or just on one of the spongey filters?.. but my vacuum (Henry) honks of rabbit pee and cat because that is what I vacuum most of.. I just burn smelly candles after vacuuming or just open doors and windows and let the outside in to freshen it up..

Not tried it, but what about vacuuming up some bicarb?

I am sure I've read on these pages about mixing essential oils with bi carb the using that to deoderise carpets (be careful with essential oils on pale caprets) it would make you vac smell better too. But be warned, vaccume engineers say Shake and Vac gets into the working parts of vacs and can damage them so maybe bicarb would too? Use sparingly.
I find my vac smells if I accidently vacuum up liquids, then I have to change the bag and clean the filter. Mostly I just open the windows when I vac.
