I'm not going to be designing a new form of congestion avoiding transport.
    That's disappointing - I was hoping for a hovercar.

I assume you are talking about commuting in public transport? I would rather drivers around me concentrate on the road rather tackling pastie tax or digitising books.

If you can come up with a working teleportation system not only will you win the eternal gratitude of almost every commuter in the world, but you will never, ever have to work again

The mental image I have right now is "The Fly".

I'd like a little gadget that fires an EMP at the ECU of any car doing 60 or below in the middle lane of the motorway when the left lane is perfectly clear.

Fit one of these to every car and soon we will be able to use our existing motorway infrastructure much more efficiently.
Except that the road will be blocked by stalled cars.

Used to have a 60mile round trip commute, was lovely when the schools were off but when they were back it was gridlock. Adjusted hours to start and hour earlier in the end or else wouldn't have been able to stand it.

More recently changed to a 'walking commute' when we moved offices a couple of miles up the road. I thought this would be healthier and more stress free but trying to avoid getting run over by cars in the wrong lane, not signaling when turning on mini islands and the constant cars, A boards and other obstructions on the pavemements make it no less stressful than driving, in fact I would say its worse. Nothing like getting nearly getting run over in the morning to put you in a poor mood.

Again though its magically much more pleasant when he schools are off, the roads are near empty and drivers become magically polite, slowing down, letting you cross, it really can be off putting for the first day or so.

    It is £266m everyday.

    So 1.8m. hours costs £266m. - that's £148/hour. Are you sure it's not 18m. hours?

It probably includes the value they could be creating, not just what they would be paid...

Thanks for all the feedback so far. It seems being productive on the Bus and Train might happen a bit in them morning but on the way home. No ones would be that keen.

They say you can't choose your work colleagues but you can choose your friends. An airline is soon going to launch scheme which allows you to choose who you sit next to on the plane.

It shares people facebook and linkedin profile so people can see what other peoples profession and interests to hopefully find a like minded person to sit next to. What do you think to a similar scheme for the commute home from work on trains and buses?

Can you make it link in with their nectar/clubcard/etc. history and display how long since that person last bought deodorant, and whether or not it was Lynx?
  • Work commuting is too ad-hoc for that kind of thing, unlike a flight, where everyone will have booked in advance & the "system" knows who will be present & has something to work with.

Some kind of personality aggregation system could work for captive audiences, but unless you're invisaging a system whereby you jump on a bus, and your phone beeps, urging you to elbow through the crushing morass of bodies to find your facebook soulmate squashed in a corner upstairs, then I don't think it's the most practical, or useful idea tbh.

Imo most people just want to use the time to sleep, or be in a state as close to sleep as possible for the time it takes to get to work, unless they're driving in which case they're mostly already there.. :rotfl:
