I commuted 120miles each way for three years recently. In a previous era I would have moved the family to be closer to the work, but the rise in stamp duty on houses means that wasn't feasible. So instead, I created loads of CO2, congestion and hours out of my life.
Stamp duty acts as a tax on workforce mobility.0 -
It is £266m everyday.
I'm not going to be designing a new form of congestion avoiding transport.
People are capable of getting the commute and work balance. But it can still be a burden and reports show that the longer the commute the lowers that persons well-being is.
I'm looking at designing a product system which could contribute to people's well-being and working time. One idea is a product in transport which can gain the collective intelligence of the nation for market research which you could be paid to contribute to or to tackling local or national problems.Could be a way to gain the national concessus on the taxation of pasties.
Look up recaptcha.
Or something like this a small task which contributes to something bigger like the here the digitazion of books.
Thanks for your feedback.0 -
I think more and more people travel armed with kindles or tablets or smartphones -so although the idea of making such things generally available is sound -I suspect too many people travelling already have access through their own equipment (and as prices fall that number will increase) to make it a commercially viable project. At present anyone with 3G or travelling on a rail service with WiFi can do what you are suggesting by logging into YouGov.
For me -One thing that would make travel nicer would be empty newspaper and book racks on trains so when someone has finished with their paper or book it can be left somewhere the carriage clearers that remove all the old papers don't take them away so they can be read again (wouldn't be a bad way to promote new books too) Not so high-tech as you're looking for though !I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Your idea sound interesting however there is a major flaw or two in it.
1. I think the most stressed out commuters are those that drive, I see enough idiots on my way to work in the morning so dont give them something to distract them.
2. The other stressful thing is overcrowding of trains and buses, how can people use your product if they are stood up and pressed against people on all sides?
Basically this idea would work for those that have the space/are in a situation to do such a thing, but then those people arent the ones suffering the most from commutes.0 -
I'd like a little gadget that fires an EMP at the ECU of any car doing 60 or below in the middle lane of the motorway when the left lane is perfectly clear.
Fit one of these to every car and soon we will be able to use our existing motorway infrastructure much more efficiently.0 -
Long ago, when I too was a wage slave, I'd be on the M8 for my 65 mile slog (one-way) and see remarkably similar cars (type/value) heading at about the same time, in about the same place, heading in the opposite direction. I often pondered that we should unite online to swap jobs and pair off so that we could stay on our own side of the country as the collective "we" were probably also doing similar jobs for similar organisations.
But, running my own show now, I don't care, I'll go wherever, when ever to make a deal.0 -
The only thing that would make my commute better was if it cost 75% less than it did now.
I got surveyed my Southeastern Trains this morning. Needless to say it wasn't a glowing report.0 -

Amen to that! Public transport in cardiff is AWFUL by the way.. try improve that if you can (Oh and the bad layout of the roads... and state of them)0 -
I'm a product design student from Cardiff metropolitan uni and am tackling a design project which is aiming to improve the commuting experience.
If you can come up with a working teleportation system not only will you win the eternal gratitude of almost every commuter in the world, but you will never, ever have to work againIf you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0
