How to use a slow cooker - raw ingredients?

OK, I managed to get my Morphy Richards 6.5L slow cooker from Netto (the last one too!) so I was chuffed to bits.
I was under the impression that you literally bung all the ingredients that you want into it and switch it on and leave it, but the instructions say you have to cook the stuff a bit first and then add it to the slow cooker?
I understand with things like Sausages as I like them browned and wouldn't like to eat them if they were very light, but it says the same for chicken and stewing meat and the veg, heat it until it goes soft?
My boss said she chucks everything in hers raw - whats your opinions?

I tend to do whatever I have time for... sometimes I brown things off but if I don't have time I just chuck it all in raw... doesn't make much of a difference as far as I can tell.Debt free date - June 2008 :T :T :T0
