Sorry, I know this isn't answering your actual question of where to find some cheaply, but..

If you do find pearls and want to check if they are genuine, you can hold a flame to them (e.g. cigarette lighter, match). Real pearls won't be damaged, plastic ones melt. Obviously you need to try this before they are strung, or the string would catch fire! If the vendor is sure of their authenticity, they won't mind you checking! Obviously this doesn't work with online vendors...

I bought mine a string of pearls from goldsmiths - they were worth about £150 but I used my 4x Tesco vouchers to get them cheaper.

They were decent pearls but I did change the box so my BM didn't know where they were from.

I doubt you'll get high st real pearls for that price - def try antique places.

Absolute Pearls have some for £39. I have pearls from there and they are lovely, cultured pearls. I also have some lovely ones from Jersey Pearls, but these are much cheaper, and quite a lot of choice.

Thank you! do you have a necklace with a clasp like the one on that link? It looks like it wouldn't stay done up very well, is this the case?

Mine has a different clasp, but actually I think that one is better, I have other necklaces with that, I think it's called a ring and bar clasp and they stay on fine.
