I moved out here to be nearer my daughters folowing our divorce. Got a job as a porter at the local hospital, but laid off as hospital £25 mil in debt. Haven`t managed to find anything else out here. I am rapidly approaching mid 50`s and not in good health (heart failure) so a bit limited in what I can do. I am getting my mortgage paid and CTAX also, but I do want to work. At the moment, I am considering working in London and finding cheap accommodation for a couple of nights. Will work for min wage as tax credits help, but can anyone suggest where to find a room. Train fare is £34 a day and takes nearly 2 hours each way so don`t fancy that. I am prepared to clean the streets if I can have one of those sit-down cleaners as not really able to stand all day.Really, anything considered. The dole office know me by name now. No bar work as I`m alcoholic(hence the heart failure) and it`s really not recommended.

Have you asked to be referred to Shaw Trust by the JC?
Since you have health problems ST should be able to help you find suitable work for you.0 -
Thanks shameless. I never heard of the Shaw Trust, but I will be `phoning them as soon as they open. Not sure if I qualify as I don`t get invalidity or sickness (and turned down for DLA), but the site does say JSA over 6 months may be ok if you meet certain conditions. The web site has certainly boosted my confidence. Thanks again.0

I hadn't heard of Shaw Trust until the JC mentioned it - it had been in my home town for a few years and I didn't even know about it!
Since you have health problems I am sure that the JC will have no problems in referring you to ST.
Hope all goes well.0 -
Sometimes in my local paper I see adverts for people wanting a clean room to rent for a few days each week. These are obviously people who need to be in London for work on a regular basis, but who don't want the hassle or expense of renting a flat or room on a full time basis.
This might be an idea for you should you decide to look for some work in London, but with your health issues it would be great if the Shaw Trust could help you to find a job nearer home. Perhaps a part time job would be more suitable for you than full time?
Good luck anyway. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
I`ve spoken to the Shaw Trust. They are unable to help me (according to their rules) as I do not get any disability premium. They have advised me to see if my doc will recommend me for this and then I can register. Even if my claim is eventually turned down.
Having said this, the very helpful person is going to check with his head office to see if they can help me anyway.0 -
Hi Suffolkb,
You could make an appointment at your local Jobcentre to see the Disability Employment Advisor. The reason I suggest this is that there are many more organisations than Shaw Trust who can help people with health problems and disabilities to find work .
What's available can vary from area to area and the eligibility criteria can vary from organisation to organisation, but the DEA at the Jobcentre should know what's available in your area and be able to refer you to an appropriate organisation.
Good luck,
