Does anyone remember SpaceQuest? Y'can download all the games in the series now, for free!

Because of their age, you might have trouble getting some of them to run properly on a modern Windows-based PC, but with a little (?) preparation and a few precautions there's a lot of fun to be had.

Best way is to play the games with:
http://sarien.sourceforge.net/ (I think there is a windows version).

    Also check out
http://scummvm.org where you can download some freeware games:

All excellent points! Though using the Sarien interpreter to play the later SpaceQuest games might be a little problematic; they use a different system.

Here's what I've been able to do with them:
    • SpaceQuest 1/2: runs best with either Sarien or NAGI.
    • SpaceQuest 3: try FreeSCI if it won't work properly by itself.
    • SpaceQuest 4: set to 256 colours if running the Windows executable, otherwise you won't see much.
    • SpaceQuest 5: erm... try it and see?
    • SpaceQuest 6: will run in Windows quite well, up to a point. I haven't finished it.
All of the above are quite at home in DOS, but for Windows compatibility you may need to tweak a bit. DOSbox and/or VDMsound may come in handy. In addition, the latter games will require patching to prevent problems with today's faster processors; they're available on the SpaceQuest.net website, but must be downloaded seperately from the games.
