Hi, This has probably been asked loads of times, but i can't find the correct thread. I have windows xp a Cd/dvd writer thing and have Real player and Media player on the PC, however i have tried to watch a dvd but i keep coming up with a message that says, you must install more software. Real player then tries to locate updated software, but still doesn't work. I have bought Roxio easy media creator suite 9. I haven't installed it yet, would this help or should i download anything free, I am very confused as i am sure that i have now confused you guys. Please help a thicko to be able to watch DVds on her computer. Thanks

Hi demented
The extra software that's needed is codecs.
Real Player and Media Player can't read your DVDs because you haven't got the extra codecs installed.
You need to Google around to find them.
Better still is to download and install VLC player. This comes with the codecs ready installed and you can use it instead of Real Player and Media Player.
You can download VLC from here:- http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html
Good luck
Download the file onto desktop, then double click it to run the install setup.Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0 -
Try updating your Windows aswell to get WMP11 and that should help.Always looking for a bargain and to help0

don't use wmp - use vlc as suggested above or media player classic (looks basic but is v good). For codecs either use ffdshow or k-lite codec pack.0

I wonder if anyone knows the answer to my problem, whenever I try to play an avi my PC freezes. I was using Media center 12 but after looking around downloaded VLC, the same thing happened, just went to a black screen and froze the PC. Any help appreciated. There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.0

could be almost anything - does it do it when you play music? is it straight away as soon as you open the file? does it stutter or totally freeze?0

music is fine, no stuttering, happens as soon as I click on the file. I have to restart the PC every time. There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.0

I'd uninstall all the codecs you have and try vlc then. Then just add one good codec pack such as ffdshow or klite. Would say its software unless you have a really old computer that just can't handle it. Also how are you opening the files? dragging and dropping? double clicking? or through the program file/open?0
