Saving on cosmetics

Hi -

I really like these old fashioned money saving tips so I thought I'd share this one - it's for getting rid of those dark circles under your eyes!

Take one fresh potato and grate it using a cheese grater. Next, take a piece of kitchen paper and put about a table spoonful of the grated potato in the middle of it. Then, make a little parcel.

At this point, you lie down on your back and put the parcel on the bit below your eye. Lie there for 15 minutes and if you're anything like me, the puffiness will be gone about 20 minutes after you've taken the parcel off and washed your face.

Hope that works for you!

Alison.

Does a bit of cucumber not do the same job without all the faffing?

  • Puffiness isn't the cause of my dark circles, it's often poor life-style habits.

Before your thread gets moved to the Health & Beauty forum I'll recommend Fullers Earth (you used to be able to get it in the chemist). Mixed with the hottest water you can bear it's a fantastic cleansing mask and absorbs oil like you wouldn't believe. Also acts as a poultice on blemishes. Oatmeal is another mask but a whole lots gentler and nourishing.

Coconut Oil as a fantastic face and body moisturiser gets my vote. Just started using this and I have to say it lives up to the hype :)

I bought a good sized jar from our Asian Supermarket for £2.29 and a little goes a long way...smells divine too :)

Cold used teabags are excellent for soothing eyes and reducing puffiness too.

A couple of tablespoons of oats tied up in a piece of muslin can be either tied under a running bath tap or swished around in bathwater make the water very soft and soothing for dry skin conditions

A drop of vinegar in the final rinse for dark hair makes it really shiny and it doesn't seem to get as greasy as quick either. Once dried - there is no vinegar-y after smell.

Keep a pot of bicarb in the bathroom and dip the tip of your toothbrush in before putting toothpaste on it - freshens breath and gets rid of tartar

  • There is no way on earth Im chopping up a potato and putting on my face! What happens if someone has an allergic reaction? Ive done the cucumber thing, but think I'll stick with my Decleor :-) I shop around and get salon sizes from Ebay imported so my skin regime doesn't cost much anyway really.

I suggest that you rub potato on your arm before putting on face as many people will have a reaction to raw spud on their skin.

Just to add i saw my doctor last week concerning a problem i have with my eyes and he told me to dip a cotton bud in some Johnsons baby shampoo and swipe it over my eyes twice a day.

Not only has the problem with my eyes cleared up i find it makes a brilliant facial wash too. Its good at cleaning off makeup too.

  • ill have to try some of these tips (apart from the potato on the eyes lol) but the cold tea bags on eyes seems a good idea, also the oats in muslin, i only really get dark circles if i havent had enough sleep, i read in a magazine you can put fruit tea bags in the bath with you and that nettle tea is great for your skin if you put a tea bag of it in the bath with you, also very good for you if you drink it but i think it tastes horrible, however i 'love' rooibos tea and carnt get enough of it and drinking this has so many health benefits and its inexepensive and is nice to drink, not that much different in taste to normal tea, just slightley sweeter i would say, which if you put sugar in your tea (i usually have 2 in normal tea) because rooibos tea is a little sweeter you dont need to have as much sugar so saves you calories too :)
