OK decided to change to energy saving bulbs. I bought 42w GE candle bulbs as i usually buy 40 watt ordinary candle. Mistake as the halogen are a lot brighter. But are halogen actually energy savings.Do they get really hot in a domestic light? I have heard that they do. Haven't a clue really.
Any help appreciated. Why is there sooo much choice on everything?Told you I was dim.:o

The bulbs you have bought will use more energy than the ones you're replacing. A 42W halogen is equivalent to a 60W 'standard'
A 28W halogen is equivalent to 40W
There's usually a comparison table on the side of the packHow do I add a signature?0 -
I don't like to put a dampener on things, but I bought those very same 42w bulbs about 6 months ago, and they blew within two weeks!
I was very particular about installing them, using a clean, dry cloth to install them with. I only do this, as I am aware that grease can degrade the life of bulbs - but it seems these bulbs were destined to die.

I think this is a little bit misleading. The halogen bulb will use more energy, but only a little more, 2 watts per hour. The halogen bulbs are energy saving, and will save around 25%, but this is where the 42W is replacing a 60W conventional bulb. HTH.
I believe they are just as hot as conventional bulbs too.0 -

Why is it misleading? The OP has replaced a 40W incandescent bulb with a 42W "energy saving" bulb. Therefore she will be using more energy (albeit a small amount). To save energy, the OP needed to replace the 40W incandescent with either a 28W halogen, a 12W CFL or a 5-6W LED All of these replacements are more expensive to purchase but have lower running costs and a longer MTBF.How do I add a signature?0 -
What they don't tell you is how much it is going to cost you to heat your house after you've replaced all your bulbs with energy savers. :mad:Science adjusts its views based on what's observed.
Faith is the denial of observation, so that belief can be preserved.
