Do employers have to give a reason for holiday refusal?

The law of the land says you are entitled to a minimum number of holidays. Employers can tell you when you can take them (incredible isnt it..?). If however they continually refuse requests then they are creating a situation by which you will not be able to take your legal entitlement.

You would do well for you and your colleagues to join a TU and work togehter instead of individually.

I know a company which has gradually introduced a system (without agreement) in which if you submit a hols request, they will ask who is covering your work pattern. If there isnt anyone, they automatically refuse !

Not really, there are many businesses that need to operate like this, for example factories and factory shut downs.

Also bear in mind that if employees could dictate when holidays occur then what does the business do if more than they can cope with off book the same day of?
The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

My use of the phrase was to indicate a situation which has left people open to widespread exploitation by unscrupulous employers and many of them do.

Of course we all know that there has to be a limit as to how many workers are off in a given day but that is a heck of a lot different to an automatic denial if you somehow have not procured "cover" when it has nothing to do with you.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Always worth following up an 'unapproved' note with a request for an indication as to when it would be possible to take the leave ...
