I have type 2 diabetes and I refused to go on an NHS education course because they just peddle the eat starchy carbs at every meal line.
I low carb and my BP, trigs, cholesterol have all improved, I've lot weight (mostly visceral fat) and my blood glucose numbers are getting better.
I'm frustrated by having diabetes because as an ex-chef I wasn't eating all the cr*p like ready meals, pot noodles and takeaways yet there are many prejudiced nurses, doctors, dieticians etc who think they can make all sorts of unfounded accusations at me and scold me for eating things I don't eat and never ate before I had diabetes let alone now.
The worst incident came when I was having lunch in hospital while recuperating from a non-diabetes related temporary health problem. In front of members of my family, a nurse grabbed my fork from my hand, stirred my salad with it and told me I wasn't eating enough starchy carbs.
I've also had the back-handed compliment of being told I don't look fat enough to have diabetes.
There are plenty of studies now that show that low carb diets work for type 2s but successive governments refuse to acknowledge that the dietary advice is wrong and it therefore costs the NHS billions.
I do agree however that anyone taking medication/with an illness should consult pharmacist/GP before taking supplements.0
