Help needed from any Jessops or Currys insiders (or any others)

Firstly, if this is in the wrong place please move it!

I am looking to buy a Nikon D40 twin lens package in time for my summer hols, along with a Kodak V610 for my DD (apparently if I need a faster camera then so does she) which I am hoping to use as leverage for a decent deal. To do this I am stuck with going somewhere like Currys which is doing the Kodak for a good price at the moment but is £20 dearer for the Nikon (I don't see that as a problem - that difference should disappear with no problem at all!).

I am just wondering if there is anyone out there who can tell me what I should aim for if I go to somewhere like Currys and start negotiations.

Also, is there any insiders from any of the camera stores that can tell me if there is going to be any reductions on the Nikon (yes I know it's only just come out, but I can dream!!) before around about May - I could easily delay the purchase of this for that length of time, not so much the Kodak as it is on offer at the moment.

Any help would be wonderful thank you.

can't directly help on price but would recommend against D40. I bought a Nikon recently and went for the D50 as it can use all Nikon lesnses - D40 is severely limited.

Thanks for that Kezza but I know the limitations - it's just that it is exactly what I've been after for a while, almost as if it's come out just for me!

I would second the reccommendation to go for te D50. It is a nice piece of kit (coming from a fuji fanatic) I am a pro and i get all my kit from photomart.co.uk and if you email one of the guys then they always give you a better than posted price.

This site: http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/ seems to be kept quite up to date with the latest SLR prices.

They're showing the best price for the D40 with 18-55 as £353 from http://www.cameras2u.com with a discount code.

Hate to join the brigade but I bought the D50 for my missus (who's got a photography degree) and it is a fantastic camera. I seem to remember it came from Jessops when they had it on offer for about £400. That was about a year ago. Not sure on other prices but it's available here for £388.

Hi Jane - if you go to kenrockwell.com and bythom.com you'll see they are very enthusiastic about the D40 so if you know it's limitations I'd say go for it! The D50 is being discontinued from the official Nikon dSLR product line and is being replaced by the D40x - essentially a 10 megapixel version of the D40 with a few tweeks here and there - so it may well be worthwhile holding back to see if prices of the D40 take a tumble. The 55-200mm lens is also being revamped into a VR lens (ie anti-shake) so there may be some deals for twin lens packages of the non VR lens.
