Switching from Oil to Gas

Hi,
Firmus have just started digging up my street! Just wondering how much would it be to convert my house from oil fired central heating with a big boiler and hotpress to running on gas central heating?
Thanks,
NI10

Depends on a load of things....Size Of House, Number Of baths/showers. how old your Central Heating system is (Nice new gas boiler and clogged up dirty pipes etc don't really go so you should either replace or flush out)

type of boiler to go for depends on above and that in turn can really vary the price.

Just to give you an idea, I'm putting in an entire new heating system in a 2 storey house (Under Floor Heating Downstairs and Rads Upstairs running of New Gas Combi) Whole thing from scratch inc all gas work and all new pipework is just under £5000...
  • Thanks for reply, I've a three bedroom end terraced house, with 1 bathroom and electric shower. Just wondering would it be worth the whole £5000 outlay of putting gas into the house.

Our Boiler was about 1960's (though the burner was only about 5 years Old) and really can't have been very efficient. With fuel (Gas & Oil) prices the way they are (and no sign of decreasing much) I recon we will recoup costs in the long run (Not intending to move any time soon in the next 20 odd years if I have my way)

We're renovating the house and floors had to be dug up anyway as they were sinking in parts. Putting in all new concrete floors downstairs with 100mm Insulation in them so should up energy efficiency of the house massively.

If you have the money and you're not intending to move then I do think it's worth updating your whole system... you'll make the money back eventually IMO
  • I bought a house with economy 7, (3 bed end terrace), got it took out and gas put in. Cost £2600 but that was with an £800 grant from phoenix for economy 7 scrappage scheme. Could check to see if pheonix are doing any offers at the minute.Changed to Firmus soons I moved in, they a bit cheaper.

Always had oil before, but found the gas to be far better, instant hot water and more room in house, no water tanks or oil tanks.

Serioulsy considering this myself, saw Phoenix have £400 to scrap your old boiler and a further £400 if you connect a large gas appliance such as a fire or tumble dryer or cooker...will watch this thread with interest.. :)

  • Pretty sure you can only avail of one of those offers and not both.

My oil to gas conversion cost £2000 of which Phoenix paid £400. I changed to Firmus straight away.

Apparently wont be able to get either offer as house already has gas connected (one fire in living room)...disappointing...phoned phoenix to find out.
