Part exchanging a car in my Dad's name

Hi,
In 2008 I bought and paid for my car, but it was registered under my Dad's name as it is a shared vehicle. Soon I will want to part exchange it for another vehicle which will be registered only in my name.
My Dad is completely on board with this, but what do I need to do to prove to the dealer that the car is "mine" to part exchange, or that I can use the value of it against a purchase in my name? Is written consent from my Dad enough, or will he have to 'sell the car to me for nothing' by getting it re-registered?
As an aside, this isn't an insurance fronting issue - my main vehicle is a motorcycle which is owned and insured by me.
Thanks for your help! Daniel

I don't think a dealer will care or even check while setting up the deal.
Once pricing agreed, dad might have to turn up at the dealer, signed paperwork might be enough.
your original purchase docs should identify you as owner and will tie in with the change of keeper.0 -

Why not take daddy along with you when you buy the new car?
Regarding insurance, funny you should mention that. You owning and insuring a motorcycle has nothing to do with whether or not you were the main user of the car.
I wonder if your dad informed the insurance company he was not the legal owner of the vehicle? If so, it would have seriously affected his ability to get a good value cover (its one of the assumptions a proposer aggrees to when using a comparison site)"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Thanks both for your replies, nice to know it won't cause too much of a problem.Regarding insurance, funny you should mention that. You owning and insuring a motorcycle has nothing to do with whether or not you were the main user of the car.

The reason I mentioned that was to point out that I am not the main user of the car - and to comply with insurance, my father is both the registered keeper and policy holder of the insurance - hence the issue of my part-exing a vehicle he owns.

But he's not the legal owner and that must be disclosed to the insurer if, for no other reason, should the car be involved in an accident and written off, the payment would go to the owner not the insured.
If he has not disclosed he is not the legal owner, you or your dad may find yourselves in difficulty in the event of a claim.
If he has disclosed he is not the legal owner, then as I said, the choice (and hence the best value) of insurers is drastically reduced.
... which all begs the questions, why did you buy a car for your dad to mainly drive and why now are you going to mainly drive the replacement car?
These are the sort of things insurers ask themselves in the event of a claim."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Yeh, tell the insurers that.
The car was bought by me but in my dads name... wonder if the Insurance is the same? Dad as main driver and you named... Your main vehicle might be a motorcycle but why shell out for a car your hardly going to use and then put it in your dads name =/0
