Low/High temp advice on the slow cooker

Hi all

I bought myself a fancy "Deluxe" slow cooker over a year ago, took it out the box about 6 months ago and have finally plugged it in today to make lentil soup!!

You recipes and advice has been brill but I wanted to check whats the difference between the low temp and high? I know it cooks quicker but is it cheaper to cook on low?

I've put the soup on high for around 5 hours is this right?

Thanks in advance

My slow cooker will cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours. I would have thought that high setting uses less and slow uses more but I'm pretty sure a lady on here worked the cost of a slow cooker on low setting to be 20p per use. Can't remember who it was but someone else might.

Thanks I'll go for 4 hours and see how it goes, I'm just trying to resist the temptation to stir it!!

High on most new slow cookers is too fast. I always use slow and check it at about 4 hours and whack it up to high for an hour if it needs longer. It rarely does unless it's full. Most of the time I only half fill it.

I usually set mine on auto so it gets the food hot then switches automatically to low. My cooker is 340 watts so at full power for 8 hours that would be 2.72 kwh, that's 24p at my leccy rate of 9p/kwh. 8 hours on low would be about half that I suppose, so 12p. NB these are very ballpark calculations.

For an evening meal I set the cooker going at lunchtime.

Thanks all, it turned out pretty well, the only thing I didnt like was steam spurting out for the last half hour, my work top was soaking.

I guess its trial and error, I'm now planning what to make next

Neetsy, I'm at a bit of a loss to know why all the steam in the last half hour. I have had two types of slow cooker, the round earthenware (Morphy Richards?) type and the white nicer looking, larger Prima model. The former in my opinion was better than the latter, but neither of them spouted steam or made a surface wet. Just my personal viewpoint, but I think it must be running too hot.
