Fuel taxes are there for very good reasons to protect the environment. People who buy gas guzzling SUV's are irresponsible, dangerous idiots unless they have a specific use for such vehicles. Statistically they are no safer and are a nuisance on the road blocking the visibility of more sensibly sized vehicles. There is no excuse for not being sensible about your fuel useage.

A car is a luxury and always will be. Only a handful of people really need one, they choose to live somewhere that makes then meed one.
But those of us who choose to live where we can make do w/o a vehicle pay a premium for living within a developed infrastructure.

I gave up on a vehicle because I resented the money it costed. It wasn't about affordability, but whether I was prepared to pay for the luxury...and I wasn't.

Twaddle. They were there long before eco-loons were invented by the failing Left, following the demolition of the Berlin wall. "The environment" is just the latest excuse for raising them.

Fuel taxes exit to raise money for politicians to spend on their Messianic schemes. The success of which can be seen all around us.

    "Earth Day" surely?

Coincidentally (or not) Lenin's birthday, too.

He was the man, you may recall, who coined the phrase 'useful idiots.'.

I didn't realise until DH came and we discussed it but we're also spending more on petrol. It costs him £8 per day to get to work, me £4.50 (though not 5 days a week) which is more than we spend on food. Plus neither of us can take public transport. We don't drive gas guzzlers either.

I think many couples and singles will find easily their petrol/fuel bill exceeds their food bill, fewer mouths eating, same amount or more of going out for work and pleasure.
