Keeping my new kitchen 'new', the OS way!

Tomorrow, the lovely man from B&Q will be putting the finishing touches to my new black and cream gloss kitchen. So, I guess the question is, what hints and tips can you give me to keep it looking new?

My Aunt has advised to spread newspapers along the top of the high counters. The papers are to trap the dust and grunge and so cleaning them will just be a matter of replacing the old papers. So any tips like that would be much appreciated:o

I will have three 500mm tall larders and I think that it might be a good idea to use some sort of a liner on the shelves to keep them fresh. Any suggestions as to what I could use?

Gloss doors...........whats best to clean these with? I've got a spray gun loaded with diluted stardrops and vinegar. I'm hoping that this will be suitable!

I've already bought a silicon liner for the bottom of the new oven, but if you have any recomendations for cleaning or prepping the hob or oven I'd be very grateful. I hear that baby oil on stainless steel appliances prevent fingers marks, is that true?

At last I will have a dishwasher, yay:j Never had one before. Happy to take on board any advice on use and any products I should be using, not only for cleaning the dishes but also about kepping the dishwasher itself clean and fresh.

I'm so pleased about this new kitchen as I have been waiting sooooooo long for it and I do believe that a well kept and clean kitchen will last much longer so i want to start straight away. I hope you dont mind me posting on the Old Style board, but everyone here is so helpful and friendly and I am looking for good old fashioned advice after all:D

Thank you for taking the time to read.

For the shelves I would use wallpaper/lining paper - you can pick up odd rolls very cheaply - it would be nice if you could get some that matches your colour scheme.

Stainless steel - baby oil would make a barrier so that spills/splashes could be easily wiped off but I think regular wiping is the key thing really. Same with the gloss finish - whatever you use do it little and often.

    Enjoy your new kitchen :)

I can imagine this would lead to fingerprints though? Stainless / blushed steel can be tricky to maintain?

I'm only envious really, as I would love a spanking new kitchen! Good for you!

Awwrr, it sounds great and you do sound really pleased.

The flyladies do a swish and swipe which if I understand correctly means doing a quick swish oftern. So keep on top of things.

Maybe clean out one cupboard a week and one at the weekend. It shouldn't take long if its little and oftern and it means you will be getting around everywhere on a monthly basis, at least.

In the cupboard where I keep flour etc in my kitchen I stand all the bags in food bags, so if anything spills it goes inside the bag.

I swear by Bar Keepers Friend, do a quick google. Its brilliant for cleaning sinks and any stains on worktops, red wine in particular :o:D You can buy it in supermarkets.

    Enjoy :)

Gloss doors: my parents had problems with theirs and were told by the makers they should have been cleaning them with any thing wet...like spray or water. Hmmmm....not sure the makers had ever cooked in a kitchen in that case. I would ask the suppliers for advice on what to clean with in case you have the same problems and need to say you have cleaned with what they wanted you to.
  • Yeah lizzy, lining paper for the shelves, thats got me thinking, greaseproof paper comes in rolls and that would work really well. Yip, I think thats settled, thanks:)

'Barkeepers friend', yes I've heard of that, thanks Linda for the tip.

I like the idea of keeping flour bags in a food bag, in fact I ususlly keep all my spice's and condiments together in an open tubberware box and find this very useful, easy to find what I'm looking for and easier for cleaning. Anyone got any ideas what type of box I could recyle to keep flour, sugar in? mmmmmmh, dont think a cereal box would be strong enough!

Has you oven got the element on the bottom, I'm assuming it's electric, if so then you shouldn't put a liner on it.

I like think wrapping paper for lining shelves.

Remember to have some trivets/heatproof mats for putting hot pans on to keep your worktops good.

I like Lidl diswasher stuff. I buy separate tablets, rinseaid amd the diswasher salt which comes in super pourable container.

    Enjoy!!

You could use plastic boxes, you know the sort you usually use for portions of food. Maybe lock and lock as those lids just lift off. Don't fancy pulling a lid off with flour inside the box  :D

Tesco's sell a own brand version of lock and lock, slightly cheaper than the real thing.
  • Lostinrates, good advice regarding which cleaner to use, will def contact B&Q regarding this.

The worktops are a shiny black, not expensive, so yes I will have to consider protecting them. Thanks for the reminder Maman :)

Mmmmmmh, as for the food storage boxes, yes, I've been thinking about this, and yes i think it is the way to go. Been to the pound shop yesterday to see what they have on offer, but everything seems just a bit too small. thanks for the tesco tip, Linda, never would have thought of them.

Thank you all for your help, I'm even picking the brains of the girls at work?
