How do you turn a carpet square into a rug?

Now the last offspring has moved out :j opps! I mean
We've got new carpets for the first time in 18 years:j one of the rooms is the study.
Hubby has an office chair with wheels in there and I've cut a 1mtr square ish piece to go under the chair to try to cut down on the wear on the carpet but it's just starting to roll at the edge.
Is there anything I can buy/recycle to bind it and make it look more rug like?

If you look at some rugs you will see that the ends are whipped - ie sewn with a stitch that goes from the underneath over the edge and down into the top to the underneath. Lots and lots of stitches very close together. A sewing machine probably wouldn't take the carpet so it would be a hand sewing task.
Binding may be easier - you may be able to find a stick on type.
You may have a problem with the wheels on the chair rubbing the bottom of the rug into the pile of the carpet - this happened to me on a laminate floor - the wheels and the backing combined to virtually "sand" the floor in that area so now I don't bother with the rug.
Office supply places sell clear and/or black protective mats for just this purpose but they can be pricy.
Sorry, not much help really! Hope someone comes up with a better idea."Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain." ~ Vivian Greene0 -
Thanks Lizzie
Have those plastic things at work and bit pricey for home.
Didn't know they make stick on binding will go and have a look on google.0 -
You can get glue on binding - do a search for 'Easybind'
Depending on the type of carpet, you might be able to run some cotton webbing over the edge and stitch to the carpet to give it a fabric edge - you see that a lot used on thin, woven carpets like stair runners.0 -
