  • Hi all, I love reading through everyone's meal ideas..... its so easy to get stuck in a rut!

I have a really small supermarket budget this month (mine includes toiletries, washing & cleaning stuff too) so I really need to be strict with myself

    ..........
Apple pie(half left in the fridge) & cream

    Sun 22nd
    HM veggie lasagne (me)
Fresh pasta with HM tomato pasta sauce (DS & DFS)
Garlic dough balls, corn on the cob
    .........
    Swiss roll & custard

    Mon 23rd
Fish fingers, chips, baked beans or tinned spaghetti
    ..........
HM Apple crumble & cream (apples need using ASAP!)

    Tues 24th
Meat/Veggie sausages, mash, sweetcorn & gravy
    ..........
    Greek yogurt & honey

    Wed 25th
 My birthday  (I'm half of 90) :rotfl:
    Chinese take away treat
    ..........
    Fresh cream sponge (and candles!)
Can of gin and tonic and a relaxing bath for me

    Thurs 26th

    HM Chicken Curry/HM Quorn Curry
    Rice & Naan Bread
    ..........
    Fruit yogurts

    ***********************************************

I'm quite pleased with this, I just hope we stick to it.

    Lunches this week are.........

Rolls with cheese & mayo, cheese & onion, tuna & mayo, peanut butter or vegemite.
    Yogurt
    Bag of Quavers
    Nutrigrain bar or HM cake
    Banana or apple

    Squash
    Flask of coffee (me)

I have decided to try and do my food shopping on a Friday and do any batch cooking on a Fri or Sat.

How do you get your OH/family to 'repeat' meals to much. My wife says she is 'sick' of something, even if we've only had it once and then I feel too bad to feed it to her! LO (4) can be a bit funny too. I think maybe I should be more firm with them :o

We never used to repeat anything more then once in a week, but i used to cook, then DH used to wash up after dinner and we'd be free by 6 - 6.30pm.

But with the baby DH helps me more and more and he LOVES leftover night now more then ever, this is because he has a new job and gets home later so we eat later (DD seems to feed just before he get's home so I never seem to get dinner started earlier, so we eat about 6-6.30pm) and washing up doesn't start until 8pm due to the bedtime routine after dinner for DD. And to free up our time we just live on Leftovers... it's just we want more family time.

Plus Leftovers and bulking meals lowers our food bills A LOT, living out of the freezer has dropped our bills from £50 to £25 a week right now (this included pet food, toiletries, cleaning products, beauty and health products but NOT nappies, that's a seperate budget of £20 a month).

DS used to complain about my food, but if he doesn't eat it and get's hungry he get's it cold later... it's been years since he's not eaten his dinner, I am very strict though :)

Also Friday night is normally Pizza night, or a 'special' meal night, so if we get bored during the week we get a treat on a friday to make up for it.

You have to think I make my curries from scratch, that's a lot of pans and dirty pots. It takes quite a time to make too. It makes it really hard to have the energy to cook something fresh every night, and we much prefer my HM food to anything that comes from a jar, and HM food tastes best if allowed to cook for a while (ie, the beef for the curry tomorrow is in the slow cooker today), also the leftovers let the flavour develop and tastes much better then when you first make it.

So for us eating repetatively isn't that boring, especially since we mix and match what we serve it with (ie. curry is great with pasta or mash or a Jacket Potato instead of rice) and because it's all HM it tastes so good we actually WANT to eat it again and again.

One thing is... we don't like eating the same thing two nights in a row, which we have to do this week... I may just freeze the extra portion and dig out something else from the freezer which is Leftover from another week.

I went on a bit, but this is how it works for us (we had a friend over a few weeks ago for a whole week, I cooked nightly and DH really HATED it because of the amount of washing up) we're happy :)

I hope something I said that helps :)

PS. if you don't do leftovers you can always cook in bulk every night for a few weeks and then live out of the freezer for the next 2 weeks... frozen food reheated really does have more flavour because the flavours are allowed to develop longer :)
We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy!

We don't use left overs the day after unless I can do something different with it. I will for me as I've no problem with repeated meals, DSs would be ok too I think but DP would moan so left overs go to make freezer building blocks

Speaking of which I need to do a using up few weeks, also doing slimming world or trying to lol so let's see what we can do

Sunday - Roast dinner - need nothing
Monday - Beef curry with rice & veg - need yoghurt
Tuesday - pasta & meatballs - need nothing
Wednesday - burgers & wedges with veg for me & rolls for them - need veg
Thursday - fajitas - need lower cal wraps
Friday - Chinese chicken - need veg
Saturday - english breakfast style - may need bacon
    Sunday - roast dinner

Lunches - salads, baked potatoes with left overs on, omelette
Breakfast - fruit, yoghurt, toast, cereal

My shop list - Wraps, veg, yoghurt, bacon, baking potatoes, fruits

Must find that SW curry recipe
One day I might be more organised...........

Even though we are a carnivorous household, I made a HUGE pot of lovely veggie stuff today so that will be featuring strongly this week!

Sun: Veggie lasagne with salad (bread & butter to fill OH up!)
Mon: Veggie cottage pie bake thing with broccoli and sweetcorn.
Tues: OH is out so I will probably have toasted pitta, hummous and celery/carrot sticks.
    Weds: L/O Lasagne with salad
Thurs: Pasta with whizzed up veggie stuff sauce.
Fri: OH is away for the weekend, beans on rye bread for me.
Sat: Moonwalk training in London with friends - afternoon tea at a posh hotel (not eating anything else so I can fill up and get my money's worth!!)

Re; repeating meals....I am happy to do it as it saves money, if OH doesn't want it, he can go without! It is easier for me as no children in the house, but I think a careful bit of tweaking and changing sides/way it's served etc etc can help.
For example, if I have loads of veggie lasagne to get through, one night we'll have it with a big mixed salad and I'll make it look all pretty on the plate. Another night we might have it with garlic bread and serve it in shallow bowls, another night with HM wedges on plates - honestly, just changing the plates/bowls etc can make a difference! :)

  • I did mine earlier but have been very bad lately at sticking to mine, wonder why I bothered in first place at times! I have a few odd bits in fridge too so might switch around some of them.. Am looking at very skint May so trying to use up bits in freezer, car bills galore and 2 weeks off sick means a sad pay packet too! Think will have to try fiscal fast thingy!

Tonight - Had Ditalini with pesto courgettes, mushrooms and peppers.

Tuesday - Cod fishcakes with leftover veg from tonight and a portion of potato boulangere (leftover from Easter and frozen)

Wednesday - Aduki bean kiev (were on offer!) with frozen root veggies mix.

Thursday - Tortellini with gammon (frozen after Easter) and peas, in possibly a brothy kinda thing

Friday - Not sure! Going to see Wicked! Might be bad and have mcd's or something cheap near the theatre

Saturday - have put down meatloaf/ meatballs... have some pork mince in freezer but not fully decided yet what I might do with it. I saw something a while back involving thai influences so might try it out

Sunday - Salmon fillet, with ginger and pumpkin rice noodles (a whim purchase, hope they are nice!) and veggies of some sort
