You mention both types there. Are you after whole of market or independent?

Whole of market means typically no fee (or small amount if in low value area) but will only look at commission deals
Independent is full market (including non commission deals) but you pay a fee (commission, if any is rebated).
I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.

Personally i would just use google to look for someone local, have a chat see if your happy with them or not - just like you might with any type of service.
Or ask friends/family for some recommendations.
