The Most Dangerous Man That Ever Lived....

I am not with you on that, those places still exist where I live, just don't stink as much.
I can confirm that there are still plenty of them in that London too. Having said that my favourite one did close down recently, but that was because they did a runner after not paying their VAT bill (allegedly).0 -
I can honestly say that I have not heard one person (in real life) complain about the smoking ban, the smokers seem quite happy that it has cut down their intake. Maybe we should open up some good ole 19th century Opium dens to keep Hamish and ILW happy

If Opium was legal, no problem.
Tobacco is not a banned substance though (yet).0 -
Well retail would say that wouldn't they? Closures are obviously nothing to do with this
Research commisioned by "the Save Our Pubs & Clubs campaign".
What a surprise that Hamish chooses a totally unbiased piece of research.
Not like him at all.
In most cities there are more licensed outlets than ever (off sales and on sales) - just not old fashioned pubs.US housing: it's not a bubble - Moneyweek Dec 12, 20050 -

I am sure Roy Castle would have been cheered by that distinction

It is the enforced lack of choice that I find annoying. As long as nobody is forced to go into an environment they do not like why not let adults make their own decisions.
If everybody was so aginst smoking in pubs etc before the ban, why were there no chains of no smoking establishments?0 -

there was the odd no smoking place in london before the ban, and quite a lot of places had a no smoking area.0 -

?
It is not just the pubs, I remember where smoking was allowed in nearly all places e.g. the Cinema (horrendous). The dangers of smoking are now well known and accepted, what is your suggestion, that people who don't wish to be subjected to the (now) well known risks should just stay at home?'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. I miss some of the old "traditional" places. They were a good place to meet up. Like Wetherspoons only smaller and not corporate.
People will never know what it was like to go for a game of darts etc now.
There are loads of old mens boozers in London where you can play darts and pool and hear tweeded and befuddled codgers muttering about how everything was better in the olden days. They just stink less. They are an EYESORES!!!!0 -

You might say the same about children working in mines or factories before the various factory acts of the 19th Century.US housing: it's not a bubble - Moneyweek Dec 12, 20050 -

there is no enforced lack of choice though, as you can just go outside and have a cigarette.
the only lack of choice is that you cannot choose to make others (including the staff) breathe in your smoke. there was nothing worse than some moron sparking up a hamlet next to you in a pub.0
