In the welfare reform act 2011, the power was introduced to allow the government to introduce a mandatory reconsideration by the decision-maker before going to appeal.
this isn't inherently bad - but a consequence of this was that there was no time-limit for this to happen, and you may not be eligible for some benefits which before would be paid during appeal while this reconsideration is underway.

This is a consultation by the Tribunals Service, on proposals to where this new procedure occurs that your appeal (from 2013) would be sent to the tribunals service first, not the DWP, and there would be a time limit.
I encourage those interested to read the consultation paper, and answer the specific questions.

Standards are going downhill everywhere, even the justice department have not bothered to spell check or proof read the page. The propsed amendments would introduce direct lodgement of appeals with the tribunal, rather than the decision-maker, and a requirement that decision-makers should respond to appeals within a specified time.[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.
[/greenhighlight][redtitle]
The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that[/redtitle](house of lords debate, talking about Cameron)0
